Next year's coach
Re: Next year's coach
Fred is gonna have to be blown away to leave Ames. I have said that for years. Having said that both the Bulls and Wolves could be fantastic opportunities for him. I still say he stays in Ames but teams are going to go after him every year. Lip says Fred has interest. My guess that's true which is partly why the rumors come up so often.
Flip may just be doing Malone a favor but I wouldn't be shocked if it's to see if he might have interest in being an assistant next year. David adelmans contract is up and Malone is a defensive guy right? Wolves suck at defense that makes a lot of sense. Him hanging out with the team probably doesn't mean anything for the future but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. Of course Malone might have a better offer somewhere else.

A lot of the ESPN basketball dudes can be annoying, but Jalen Rose is pretty plugged into the league and was calling the "KG/Wolves ownership" thing since like early 2013. He obviously listed multiple teams that Freddy would be interested in (Minny and Chicago), but it's a positive sign for Hoiberg fans (myself included).

I wonder who Hoiberg would want as assistants? I I wonder if they would give him free reign of that.

I think Fred is in such high demand he will be able to dictate some terms if he wants to do so.
I agree that Jalen Rose saying what he did has some credibility. I also think the Wolves have some additional advantage because they are so close to Ames and Hoiberg Glen, Flip and KG all have history which probably gives Hoiberg a comfort level and possibly a longer leash than with another franchise. The real question here is whether Flip wants to give up coaching this team even if he can get Hoiberg. I have always gotten the sense that once Flip took over with the young guys particularly Wiggins and Lavine he was going to want to have hands on development for a couple years. Adding KG to the team seems to make it even less likely he would let go of the coaching duties.

I also worry that Flip isn't ready to give up the coaching reins yet, especially since he can use injuries as an excuse for the poor record this year. This is where Glen has to get involved. He publicly stated last year that it was not his preference that Flip wear two hats, but after Joerger turned us down at the alter, Flip was likely able to convince Glen that he was the best option...at least for the short term. I still think Glen wanted, and still wants, Hoiberg to coach this club. Now that Fred's season is over I expect, or at least hope, that Glen will stay in contact with Fred to gauge his interest.
Rose may be connected in the NBA, but let's not give him any credit for the KG ownership rumor...KG himself has said for awhile that he is interested in owning the Wolves. But at this point in time it's only a wish for KG...there have been NO talks between KG and the ownership group.

I think Flip will step down for the right coach. I think he would have let the guy from Memphis coach the team, but when that didn't work out he didn't like any of the other options.

Agreed. But I think there's a savvy business decision behind it.
As King Poobah of the organization, Flip has a lot of arrows he can fire at almost anytime. Having the option to go back to the sidelines down the line should something go wrong is a lot more palatable if Flip doesn't use up that goodwill with MULTIPLE bad seasons at the very beginning of his tenure.
Returning to the sidelines won't be an option for Flip down the line if he's coming off 4 straight 55+ loss seasons as a coach. (going back to his days in Washington...)

Re: Next year's coach
It would be SOOOO Timberwolves to miss out on a great coaching candidate because Flip doesn't want to give up the reigns quite yet.
Honestly, can you think of a better job than President of Basketball Operations? I don't even see why Flip would WANT the daily grind of coaching and traveling and all that nonsense. POBO is the comfiest job in the league, just pimp out your office Flip and bring in someone with fresh ideas and a passion for 3's!!!

Re: Next year's coach
I don't see Fred Hoiberg being an option. We have one country club member as our assistant coach in Sam Mitchell. Our club can't possibly disrespect one member by bringing in another member to leap frog him. I'm with alex here, the writing is on the wall that Sam Mitchell is the next head coach.
The only other possibility I can see is an outsider like Thibodeau.

Re: Next year's coach
Thinking about it a little more Glen would probably really want Hoiberg if available but also Thibs would be interesting also he has a relationship with KG from Boston right? I like Flip as coach more than a lot here but if we could get either Hoiberg or Thibs I would be all for that in a heartbeat. I think it's possible those guys might be people Flip would give up the reins for. I don't think that list is going to be very long though.
