If the Wolves had actually hired Sam to be the head coach before this year I think he would be fired right now or very soon. But since he was forced to take over an unfortunate situation there is no doubt a much stronger chance they'll let him finish out the year. I guess you can look at this two ways:

1) Keeping Mitchell is going to stunt players' development and push the collective fan apathy to an unprecedented level (ie Target Center is already a morgue)

2) Mitchell will get the least out of this squad--record wise we will continue to underachieve, possibly grossly underachieve, but this will result in a top 5 draft pick or maybe even a top pick like Simmons or Ingram

So the question becomes, does #2 trump #1? As much as I hate what I'm seeing on the court, I think at this point it might. As a beat down Wolves fan I want to see a new interim coach right now to see if the young guys will respond to a new voice (no guarantee they will), but logically maybe the best thing that could happen is we roll out the Mitchell tank for another 1/2 season, swallow the supersuck pill one more time and try to add one more big piece through the draft.

How much would a new voice that likely won't be here a few months from now really help? I just don't see a no brainer coaching hire coming in here this year so might as well roll with Sam but you do have a bright point of view with a tanking situation. Lol

I think it's very possible a new voice could make a dramatic difference. Sam's a terrible fit for this, or quite frankly, any team. I really believe we have no idea how talented or good this year's version of the team could be.

Do you have any suggestions of guys to take over immediately?

Well, my suggestion for an "interim to the interim" is Rick Adelman...

POBO and Head Coach to JVG now. It's a fine situation, no one expects anything at this point and he has the rest of the year to evaluate the roster up close. Let's beat the rush on this.
