Rubio will be in a similar situation as Pek. Nobody made an offer on Pek and we still overpaid. Can't make that same mistake again. Rubio is going to be a RFA. Who else is going to offer $12mil/year??

Ricky has next to no leverage. The only leverage he has is the threat to pick up the QO which I can't think of the last player to ever do that with a multi-year extension on the table. If someone gives him the max then they give him the max, but the Pek situation should be a learning point of don't bid against yourself just to make a guy happy. You can't get it back once the deal is signed, so why make a deal that you don't want to make when you have most of the negotiating power? All of these guys are getting paid before they are worth it on these extensions. Ricky isn't worth $10 million so I shut down any talks over that number and tell him to get another team to give him that next offseason and we'll talk. He's either going to earn the big deal next season or be about the same and be in the boat Pek was where he wasn't worth the max, but that would have been the only way to pry him away from us. I can tell you right now that no team would give Ricky the max because they've all had a few years now to see how flawed he is as a player. He doesn't have the unknown, European allure he had on draft night that made a lot of teams want him. He's also killed most of the ideas that he can be a superstar player in this league with his complete lack of scoring ability. The only way he gets the max from anyone is to earn it next year.
Re: Is Zgoda Serious!?
I would say ricky has a lot more leverage than pek did this past off season. As ive said, ricky brings other things outside of the playing court to the table. Rubio will sell tickets and excite the fanbase. Rubio has that 'it' factor in terms of connecting with the fans.
Take into consideration that rubio will be 23 by the time of his next deal. Still a few years away from his prime while pek was in his mid 20's and prime age. I am certain that rubio will get big offers should we chose to sit and match. Its better to get a deal signed to show commitment rather than sit and wait to match.
Bottom line is rubio has flaws in his game but he has proven elite skills and is a draw to the fanbase. If he can get that jumper down to a luke ridnour level then he will be complete.
I standby my prediction of a 5yr 60 m deal with opt out after year 4. He wont get anything less than peks deal.

Re: Is Zgoda Serious!?
My understanding of the CBA is that Ricky can't get 5 years unless they pay him the max salary and designate him as such. Since I don't see any chance of him getting 14 mil in the first year, he will be limited to 4 years as was Love. I don't see that as a sticking point.
The big difference between Pek (who was overpaid) and Ricky is that Ricky still has significant upside, and has also been healthy since rehabbing the ACL/LCL injury.
If Ricky's agent pushes for the max, I wouldn't blame Flip for waiting another year. The risk is Ricky playing out the QO and walking away, or forcing a trade.

Taking the QO is a last resort option by both parties. If they don't come to an agreement, a sign & trade to another team is the usual outcome...

Sjm, just want to ask if the reason pek can get a 5 yr not max deal is because he was going into his 2nd non rookie deal? While ricky cant get a 5yr deal unless its for the max because hir is coming off his rookie deal? Your answer may help me clarify that bit.
If rubio cant get a 5 yr non max deal under the cba then i will revise my prediction that rubios side will settle for a 4yr50m deal with no opt out.

It was actually pek's first non rookie deal, but he wasn't on the first round rookie scale so it apparently doesn't affect his contract. Pek signed a new contract as a RFA rather than what is considered an extension. Ricky on the other hand falls into the same category as Love, Westbrook, etc. and has to be the designated player to receive the five years and it has to be for the max salary. I am not sure if Ricky waited till next off season if he could sign a regular five year veteran FA contract at that time similar to what Pek did. There is clearly a difference in signing an extension and re-signing at the end of the contract.
