Fun thread, and some interesting names on there for sure. But my take is that if Mike Conley isn't the starting PG next year on day 1, this team will not be as successful next year...unless of course Dillingham blows the coaching staff away in preseason and takes the job away. Unlikely. Kek posted that Mike had the second best net rating on the team after January 1 behind Rudy, third best in the playoffs behind Rudy and Jaden, and second best behind Rudy in the finals. Trading away assets to replace him in the starting lineup doesn't sound like something TC or Finchy would be inclined to do. I'm pretty confident we go into next season with a PG depth of Mike/Rob/Donte, and I'm satisfied with that. And if Ant, Jaden and Naz continue to improve, and we get contributions from the young guys who were not in the rotation, I think we will be better next year.
But I don't want to torpedo the thread because it's the time of year to do stuff like this. I'll hang up and listen.
I'm glad you're listening...
Finch put a damper on that little stat at his exit interview. One of the reporters asked him about that net rating stat for Rudy and Mike, and he responded with Mike gets to start the first 6 minutes of each half alongside Rudy when the Wolves usually are in good shape, and then they usually try to pair Mike with Rudy at other times. So, I infer that Mike's good net rating is more a function of playing most of his minutes alongside Rudy, versus some phenomenal net rating contribution that Mike creates.
I like Mike, but he does not have the juice any more to be the starting PG alongside ANT. Mike said he feels good going into next year, but is willing to do whatever is needed for the team, whether it is starting or coming off the bench.
In lieu of a trade for a dynamic PG, or finding a ready-to-start PG in the draft, Donte ought to be the starter while Dilly continues to develop into whatever role he can grow into.
Yeah, I now think of this as Plan B, with Plan A going out and getting a pretty big name like the ones I listed. But Plan A may not pan out of course.
Mike Conley can only get worse. He literally has almost zero chance of getting better or being able to handle more minutes next season given his age. I feel like we have squeezed him for about as much as we can and it's time to get out in front of his inevitable decline.

After listening to a bunch of pods and reading a bunch of well thought-out opinions on here (except for the "Finch and Connelly are trash and you are all imbeciles!" knucklehead), I've come around to the idea that Connelly is going to want to find a more dynamic running mate for Ant at PG and that it's too much of a gamble/waiting game for that player to be Rob Dillingham or Scoot Henderson and not enough of an upgrade for it to be a Tyus or Tre Jones type.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (point power forward)
Darius Garland
Trae Young
De'Aaron Fox
Derrick White
DeJounte Murray
Giannis of course would be a long shot, but if you include Jaden in the proposal along with Dillingham, I wonder if that gets Connelly a seat at the table. The others are no picnic either in terms of the assets we'd need to include, but I do think Connelly is going to try to take a big swing this offseason.
Thoughts?
Salary wise and simply player wise we could offer Rudy and Jaden and for Giannis. Maybe throw in picks/swaps another young guy if needed (not Clark or TJ though, I need to keep them). Rudy could be in route to another team if need be (3 team trade).
I think with Giannis you'd need to bring in shooting, Jaden becomes less needed with Giannis here also. I'd consider that, not sure they would. Probably try and move Ju to another team also.
Pass on Trae (bad defense DLO type). The other 4 are all upgrades so depending on price, for sure.

Boston might have interest in Donte in a Derrick White trade because of the price difference. It's a really difficult trade to do without Brooklyn, however.
Wolves get White
Celtics get Donte, Jaylen Clark and Jalen Wilson, future BKN 2nd
Nets get Rob, Luka, Lenny, And Josh
No, the trade didn't work without Clark unless you put in TJ but I feel he would be more needed. That could change based on the draft, however.
Would save Boston a good chunk of change and bring some talent in the door. Nets get some free lottery tickets for minimal cap space. Wolves get a serious piece that takes their defense to a new level and provides a very good ball handler and underrated scorer. Wolves can look into a drafting a pg either this year or next year if they want.

Here's someone who I could see TC go big game hunting for...
Tyler Herro...
Go ahead, shoot me down!

And then there's always the risky Randle for Lonzo Ball and Vucevic...

He's a better version of DDV may be? Similar to DDV, he's a very underwhelming playoff performer. Also not really a PG, right?

Herro feels you're spending 3x as much for what you were hoping to get outta Donte

I kind of like this deal. Vooch has one year left but he has great shooting range and rebounds better than any Wolf. He has good hands unlike Rudy for those lob passes and he can pass out to the perimeter well. His defense is suspect but not sure its a significant downgrade from Ju's defense. He's a good passer and doesn't turn the ball over as much as Ju. But the best part is that Lonzo Ball is perfect when healthy. We could rest him a lot until we approach the playoffs. And if doesn't work, so what, I didn't want Randle back anyway.

Sounds kinda like the Rudy instead of Kesler deal, huh?
