He can be effective but only if you build your entire offense around him.

No way the Patriots want the fumbler. He just doesn't fit the Patriots.

Yeah it depends on the offense and players around him especially the QB as we saw with Teddy how much you have to build the entire offense around him. Some offenses would work better than others with fewer adjustments. We don't know exactly what Shurmer has in mind but AP isn't a guy that's been too good as a 3rd down back in the past. He doesn't have the resume of AP but look at the contract Alfred Morris got last year from the cowboys to be a backup. I totally agree with your point you have made a number of times that AP is not particularly versatile and that hurts his value a lot. When Chester Taylor left the team that's when I began to have a significant appreciation for how well (or how bad) RBs were at pass protecting and picking up blitzes.

It hurts when having one player on the field means either you're going to run the ball, or that you're passing the ball while effectively playing with only 10 useful players. AP has been for his entire career a much better version of Herschel Walker in that he could move east west, not just north south, but was at best an obvious decoy in the passing game.

Chester on the other hand wasn't a guy who put up gaudy rushing numbers even in his prime, but he was so valuable beyond that! It's so easy to get caught up in the glory stats and miss out how much otherwise average players bring to a team.

I think there were a couple seasons where AP was in the same offense he was good enough pass protecting and catching the ball out of the backfield plus he was such a threat running the ball he wasn't a limiting factor because teams had to account for him. He was a better weapon than the QBs or whatever pathetic receivers they were putting on the field. The problem is when he doesn't have enough familiarity with an offense and the offense like you said isn't built around his preferences...yep he is pretty predictable and even dangerous for a QB since he becomes somewhat clueless as a pass protector.

Also you bring up Walker...well here is some fun stats for you. He had 5 seasons where he caught 50 or more passes. No none of those seasons where when he was a Viking. They really sucked at utilizing him. I mean REALLY sucked using him. He was more versatile than AP.

One fun Hershel Walker story. At my job in HS my boss was a big sports guy, a Vikings fan and was a really cool guy. He said he was watching Monday night football when Walker was playing for the Giants. He said on a kickoff Walker blasted past everyone (he didn't have the ball) like they were basically just walking and threw a big block on some poor guy that probably didn't see him coming. He was just amazed at the speed Walker had on that play.

Walker and Bo Jackson were freaks. I still think Bo Jackson was the best RB of my lifetime.

I saw someone say when the Vikings should have cut ties with AP. I was ready to trade him at his peak. After Farves second season and before he got hurt the first time and we knew we would be rebuilding.
I was ready to shut him down for the year he blew out his knee the first time just knowing it was a wasted season.

After thinking about it Seahawks seem like the perfect team for AP.

They've been trying to get back at the Vikings ever since they signed Hutchinson to that poison pill contract!

Burleson might be the most productive player they have signed away from the Vikings or gotten them in trades. And...that's not exactly saying a whole lot.
