And for 7 years...

The 7 years is the killer to me.
I wonder if you are better off trading during the season then offseason with someone like Plouffe.

I'd still go after Fernandez via trade route hard. If it doesn't involve Sano, Berrios, Buxton, Gonsalves or Jay, they can put together whatever package the Marlins see fit.

Good quick breakdown on the Twins best prospects. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/11/5/9677606/minnesota-twins-top-20-prospects-for-2016

Not sure I would want to give up Max in a deal yet.

I love Fernandez. but I agree with the guys you want to protect. I would add Gordon to the list also as he is really our only SS option in the minors (I don't think Polanco will ever be a SS). Polanco, Walker and Stewart are all top 10 prospects in the best minor league in baseball. Add in an Arcia or Vargas, and maybe they bite.

I don't know much about John Hicks. Can he hit? Frame? Get baserunners? I'm also concerned about his age. He did finish 2nd in the 1972 Heisman balloting.

Kepler, Stewart and Polanco for Fernandez seems like it would be the right starting point for both teams.

I wouldn't do this trade in the offseason. He has talent for sure but enough flags to be a concern. I am not sure this clubhouse is ready for him yet either.
