I think the ceiling for Jaden McDaniels is closer to Jerami Grant -- not Scottie Pippen. That's not a knock whatsoever, in my opinion, as Grant has been fantastic this year in an even bigger role with Detroit. But McDaniels doesn't have the overall game for me to throw a Pippen comparison out there.

Pippen was a great passer with real solid handles and vision. He was over shadowed my Mike (of course) but his offense was real nice. He could initiate offense, drive by guys and finish at an elite level, I'm not sure Jaden will have that high degree of skill. No knock on Jaden if he doesn't.
I see Jaden as potentially being a better defender in the long run. He has a real talent and length to guard guys and block shots. We all know Pippen was an all time great defender too.
The kid has lots of time. How good he becomes depends on how his playmaking ability on offense develops. Pippen is the ultimate, but I'll take an all star appearance or two,

He's literally just a pup. No one knows where he will end up.

Comparing someone to Pippen who IMO is one of the best all around versatile players and defenders of my lifetime is a little much but I also think Cool is trying to make a point about McDaniels that he is more that what people are thinking he is. Remember around draft time so many people were saying he was an offense guy that was a boom or bust. After watching him in some college games my take was he had a skill base to be a 3 and D guy as well so a decent floor was there too. He seriously has a legit base of all around skills and talent and from what I had seen and what fans seems to be saying about him he is playing smart basketball...which is sort of different from the reports about him and some of what I saw at a least offensively. There was some reports from the Seattle ballers that said he was a smart basketball player so honestly this doesn't surprise me. We may have finally drafted one of those super valuable later round players that will be cheap for 3 more years. I'll go with a rich man's Trevor Ariza which if so he will be making lots of money for a long time if he doesn't have any injuries. That probably sounds like a conservative comp but a better version of Ariza would be a pretty good player. At one point it looked like Ariza might break out with more skills but he didn't.
I think Cam's Jerami Grant comparison is probably the best one. But I get Cool's Pippen comparison. McDaniels does have length, fluidity and bounce that's reminiscent of Pippen. But he doesn't have Pippen's ball-handling prowess and he certainly has a really long way to go to be anywhere close to what Scottie was. Having said that, it's obvious that McDaniels is oozing potential and who knows how good he can become. Suggesting that McDaniels has the potential to be a Scottie Pippen is a reach, but not a crazy unfounded reach.
Bottom line is that McDaniels is a keeper. He's a guy this franchise should think of as one of its core young pieces to build around. His game is mature enough that we won't have to wait 4 years for him to be a net positive contributor or better.
Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported in mid-February that the Hawks were seeking a lottery-level pick in exchange for the 2017-18 All-Rookie selection.
I would throw that 2024 lottery-protected first-round pick and a couple matching contracts, including Jarrett Culver, at the Hawks and see if they bite.

Whoa.
WHAT?!?!?!?!?
Pippen was a TEN-time All NBA Defensive player. Pippen finished in the top 10 for MVP voting SIX times. All NBA SEVEN times. Maybe these kinds of comparisons when times are good are why we turn on some of these players so much if they don't pan out?
[Edit: I posted before reading all the responses. I think Cam's Grant comparison is an infinitely better -- and more realistic and fair -- potential comparison.]

Potential, in no way am I saying it will happen.
Then why include the comp?
The two guys don't even play alike. Apologies for dwelling on this... but you irked me with this one. I'm very irked right now.
