Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported in mid-February that the Hawks were seeking a lottery-level pick in exchange for the 2017-18 All-Rookie selection.
I would throw that 2024 lottery-protected first-round pick and a couple matching contracts, including Jarrett Culver, at the Hawks and see if they bite.
I don't understand why people are so hesitant to give up this first round pick that's protected? I get we're going to lose our pick this year or next. But if they move doesn't work wouldn't they just blow it up and get picks for Kat, DLO and Collins to replace that pick. The just build around Edwards and Mcdaniels.
Before this takes on a life of it's own, let's get centered a little bit. I did not say Jaden would become the next Scottie Pippen. Nor did I compare him to any player and say that is what he would become. I said I can see some Pippen in him and suggested that was his ultimate ceiling. Hence the comment about squinting real tight. No one knows what this kid's trajectory will be, it depends on a lot of factors. But let's not forget Pippen spent 4 years in college and then wasn't an immediate sensation in the NBA. Anything can happen over the next 5 years. But I am confident in saying getting Jaden that late in the first round was a coup and he's one of the main reasons I still turn the games on.
Was listening to the Bill Simmons podcast, he had Jackie McMullan on. What she said "I'm hearing Minnesota wants John Collins bad... other teams want him but Minnesota is the team I'm hearing and they want him bad"

Sure.
But I guess beyond one being a rookie with less than 600 minutes... I simply don't understand the comparison on any level. They don't even play similar styles.
Pippen's greatness was what he could do with the ball in his hands. He was definitely not known as a spot-up shooter. That's an entirely different style than what McDaniels has shown... or is projected to show. Right now, 56% of his shots are catch-and-shoot three pointers.
Pippen was a ball hawk and thief, averaging 2x or even 3x as many steals vs. blocks. McDaniels has about 3x as many blocks as steals.

That's my thinking as well, jester. The cupboard can always be replenished assuming the assets still have value in the future, and I see the three players you mentioned specifically still having positive value should Minnesota need to blow it up and really rebuild. In the meantime, why not put together a roster that is worthwhile with some very talented pieces and see what happens?

Pippen was a great passer with real solid handles and vision. He was over shadowed my Mike (of course) but his offense was real nice. He could initiate offense, drive by guys and finish at an elite level, I'm not sure Jaden will have that high degree of skill. No knock on Jaden if he doesn't.
I see Jaden as potentially being a better defender in the long run. He has a real talent and length to guard guys and block shots. We all know Pippen was an all time great defender too.
Whoa.
WHAT?!?!?!?!?
Pippen was a TEN-time All NBA Defensive player. Pippen finished in the top 10 for MVP voting SIX times. All NBA SEVEN times. Maybe these kinds of comparisons when times are good are why we turn on some of these players so much if they don't pan out?
[Edit: I posted before reading all the responses. I think Cam's Grant comparison is an infinitely better -- and more realistic and fair -- potential comparison.]
Potential, in no way am I saying it will happen.
Then why include the comp?
The two guys don't even play alike. Apologies for dwelling on this... but you irked me with this one. I'm very irked right now.
I didn't, I said they don't play a like. I said he could potentially even a be a better defender which again is highly unlikely.
I wasn't even a Pippen fan but I respected his game. He was avg. 6-7 assists per game during his better years and that would be a far reach to see Jaden reach that/ Sure it's possible but comparing the two is almost like taking a shot at Pippen.

Yeah, that definitely makes sense to me. If John Collins couldn't shoot the three as well as he can, I don't think Minnesota would be "dying" to trade for him, as ESPN and Bleacher Report put it. I speculated that Collins could be a trade target of Gersson Rosas' before the season, but I didn't truly envision it working out for multiple reasons. The first being I didn't think the Hawks would continue to disrespect one of their young stars in similar fashion to how the Wolves did Kevin Love.
But here we are and the trade momentum is definitely building up. I think Minnesota is going to land him. I'm just hoping it's a deal similar to ones I have brought up in this thread centered on a future first-round pick with protections and not one of their young, promising players.
I think everyone should just accept that this team is terrible and are going to ride out contracts and a loss of a draft pick. Then we rebuild around Edwards and McDaniels. Repeat.
