Rudy Gay is signing with the Spurs on a 2-yr, $17 million deal ($8.5 million per year) with a 3rd year player option.

Question: Would you rather have (1) Taj on the contract we're giving him, or (2) Rudy Gay for $9 million per year for 2 years with a 3rd year player option?

Note: I'm assuming Gay would want to sign here for slightly more than the Spurs are paying, but obviously have no idea whether he'd have any interest.

I'd clearly prefer Taj if cap room weren't an issue. But it would be tempting to have Gay at $9 million per year, which would leave us with around $6 million in cap space to sign another quality FA.

What i like about it is that it takes up a good chunk of space from a team and with players we can't get. i'm hoping they let Ellington go and if they do we should move quickly and offer him the Room exception. Maybe we could get a better player for that price it he can hit 3's and actually handle the ball just enough to be more than just a shooter and is a smart player. I'll take it. I'm probably overvaluing him a bit but I think he would be a nice get. There is a chance you don't get any of the better players like Miles, Afflalo, Henderson etc.

I wouldn't use the RE on Ellington. I guess I assign less value to him than you do. I'm still holding out hope we can get Afflalo or Henderson for the RE. Maybe we can even get Miles on the RE, although that's a long shot.

The Knicks are apparently interested in signing Jonathan Simmons but would likely have to trade O'Quinn or Courtney Lee to free the necessary cap space. Question: Would you rather have (1) Taj on the contract we're giving him, or (2) cap room to possibly swing a cap-absorbing trade for O'Quinn at around $4.5 million per year for 2 more years or Courtney Lee at around $11.5 million per year for the next 3 years?

I don't know, Lip. There certainly are valid arguments to be had about "value". But here is my perspective on the Wolves grabbing Gibson while they could:

There are many people who believe our biggest need was at PF, because Dieng should be coming off the bench. So besides changing the strengths and weakness at PG, their top priority was a starting PF. We know they took a stab at Milsap. I assume plan B was Gibson. There were other teams pursuing Gibson, so the Wolves had to move on him, or miss him.

It's easy to be an arm-chair GM. Thibs chose to mold his starting lineup right out of the gate. There is still time and options for shoring up the bench. I am not having a problem with how things are unfolding so far.

Tim - I disagree. It's NOT easy to be an armchair GM! It's hard work! :) Seriously, you make a good argument. I just don't see the need at PF or Taj (who I like) being worth the $14 million in cap space given other opportunities. But there are lots of unknowns and at least Taj is a very good player who should make us a better team.

Vince Carter signing with the Kings. I think it's for the vet minimum.

Good for him. Love seeing these old stars still playing at that age. Wish we could of got him for the Vet. Hell even the RE.
