I'm disappointed with Cheryl wearing that shirt. I hope we can all agree that kids shouldn't be transitioned. An adult who makes that choice has the right and shouldn't be persecuted for it. But please don't promote the concept with our youth.
I work in the mental health field. I’ve worked with people who have identified with not their biological sex and older people who have transitioned.
I just want to say a couple of things, I mostly agree that making that big of a decision shouldn’t happen before you are 18, due to your brain not being fully developed (brain not fully developed at 18 either but you are a legal adult). But when you are 18, you are an adult, it’s your life do want to do with it doesn’t “hurt” anyone else.
In my experience making a transition is almost never pushed by the parents. I would mostly say in my experience the kid is usually isolated and made to feel less than others. The brain is a unique, scary, and awesome thing. Usually a lot of it comes from trauma and a lack of community and belonging. Everyone wants to feel wanted. Mean shit we are all on this message board for some type of community that’s why we haven’t left in 15+ years.
And I think that is what Cheryl is saying. I don’t think she is saying let’s have all these kids change sex. But sports is awesome, sports is probably the biggest community team building thing you will ever get in life. Let’s not isolate kids that are different than us, let’s teach them skills on building friendships, working together, being physically healthy. Let’s not isolate the kids that say “why am I the way I am” even more that leads to more depression, isolation and more mental health symptoms/disorders.
Sports is a connector and a separator in my opinion. And like Cheryl mentioned at her presser on Saturday at practice, things change when scholarships are involved and competing at the highest level. Like on the Minnesota professional women’s soccer team there is a born female who transitioned to a male who is their starting goalie.
There is nuance to every situation, discussion is important, also Tim tell me to STFU if you want me to stop because I will because this is not fully about basketball. And I like talking hoops with you all in this silly little community we have built from so facets of life
Kek, do you have an opionion on why Gender Dysphoria simply wasn't a thing for my generation? Sex changes were starting to be a thing, but It just wasn't anything you saw in K-12.
From a straight brain medical standpoint, I’m not educated enough to give an answer, but I can do some research and get back to it if I have time.
My theory is that there was a lot of gender dysphoria back in your generation and my generation also (I’m in my mid 30s) but it was hidden a lot more because it was massively frowned upon “back in the day”. Very similar to being gay, there wasn’t less gay people it was just hidden more because it was not socially acceptable.
I also want to say social media has changed everything. I work with a lot of lower income households and a lot of kids. Kids are so fucking mean. You are given a screen so early in life because it’s easier for the parents, and it’s socially acceptable. You are one click away from porn that watching at a young age is so detrimental to your brain chemistry, so many interactive games like Roblox or Fortnite when you are playing a game with a potential 45 year old man being a predator online with your 10 year old kid. Having Snapchat in locker rooms, Instagram where you are comparing yourself consistently to your peers and others for unrealistic body issues. Kids playing video games for 10 hours a day because it’s easier to let your kid do that then parent, get creates such a lack of social skills. Kids have such a different life now than what we had. In my work experience leads to so much anxiety and depression.
And then just in general, population has increased and we are more inclusive in general than in the past for random demographic issues so you just see it more because you have access to Social media where everyone has an opinion on something

What do you mean when you say kids shouldn't be transitioned?
Kids shouldn't be allowed to get transgender drugs or surgeries.
That's a fair position. Kek can likely speak to this more but I don't think someone has to be transitioning physically to be trans.

So, she wears a shirt to taunt Sophie, but then complains about men taking coaching jobs in women's sports. Typical hypocrite.

This is what is wrong with social media today. Find me one quote that Cheryl says trans players belong in the WNBA. She even mentioned that once scholarships are involved things change. Cheryl believes that inclusion matters, and does want to isolate kids that feel a certain way about themselves. Her shirt said “Trans kids matter”, do they not or should we be killing the kids because their brain is telling them one thing.
To Cheryl point about coaches. The league currently 7 female head coaches and 8 man head coaches. Over the last 15 years. 11 championships have came from women head coaches, 4 from men. There have been 44 women college basketball champions. 30 of them have been women’s coaches and 14 men and Geno has 12 of those 14. But only 41% of women are HC in college woman’s basketball.
I think it’s safe to say woman have had more success than men coaching women’s basketball players. Not saying men shouldn’t be coaching women but why do they have more coaches when they have less success? That is what Cheryl is getting at

Maybe I'm wrong, but wearing that shirt was an answer to Sophie's comments. At no time has Sophie said anything derogatory about trans people, only that biological males should not be competing with biological females.
So if they're in agreement then why antoganize with that shirt?

I’m not going to join this debate. I’ll only say this: The fact this debate is taking place is an example of what’s wrong with the WNBA.
What’s worth discussing in my view is the great season the Lynx are having, the emergence of Miles as a star, the joy of watching a player like Clark and the terrific Lynx win over Indiana the other day.
David Stern would never have allowed players and coaches to make themselves billboards for political/social commentary and would have strongly discouraged turning so many things into political/social dramas. He would have also made sure officials protected Clark and promoted her as a popular face of a League on the threshold of sustainable success.

Agree with the commissioner is so bad at the top by far the biggest issue with WNBA. The commentary about the league has been crazy these last 2 weeks and commissioner has said nothing. Also no showing Dan Patrick is pathetic.

Lip honestly I'm not so sure any league commissioner has that kind of ability to control the narrative in the world we currently live in.
Personally I have very much enjoyed following the WNBA this season the first one doing so anywhere nearly this closely. I can mostly tune out all the drama which honestly seems driven much more by social media and fans than stuff on the court etc. It's a very fun league and I'm pretty excited that Women's sports is taking off like it has.

I'll add that I do agree that the WNBA commish isn't the best. I do think they are not the best running the league in general and at this point to some extent are being handed a fantastic product and all they have to do is not fumbled it but at times it feels like they are trying! Lol
It's also worth remembering that the commish works for the Owners. They should obviously be looking out for the overall product but still. I was just thinking about how much are the teams ownership really putting their efforts into this league and even if they are now (they are making money!!!) are they doing what actually makes sense? Growing a Sports league like the WNBA is right now is different than the NBA even probably like 20 years ago. How many WNBA owners know what they are doing? Imagine if the Lynx hasn't hired Reeve...Glen although I think would have valued the team even without the success I don't think he would have been a guy doing things to drive the sport forward and that's putting it somewhat nicely.
In general players are driving the game forward and it's not just a couple players. Every year it's at least 1 new very good player but the talent level and play is so much higher than idk even like 10 years ago. Cool and Kek can likely speak to that even more than me but women's college basketball is almost unrecognizable compared to when I went to games a few times a year in the 90's and early 2000's.
Anyway I'm just enjoying the Lynx this year and what they have built and seemingly continue to build. WNBA expansion franchises are also doing well too which is a big positive.
