If there are no consequences for your "words" then people could literally say anything and get away with it and that's not ok.
There are consequences to words in terms of libel and/or slander, but those are legal consequences.

I'm pretty sure the concept has been around a lot longer than since the 60's. That people fight over words is not surprising, that they're stupid enough to do so is.

That's hilarious! Bring on the wild west, don't even consider holding people to a higher standard! As a highly public figure he has a responsibility to the 6ers and the NBA to act in a professional manner, both on the court and off and he's failing miserably. He's a fucking 20 year old millionaire, there should be zero words from typical street punks that get any response other than a shrug and laugh. You know damn well the NBA sits rookies down and talks to them about how these types of people will try to bait them into a fight with their sole purpose being to extort a settlement out of them, and yet Okafor has shown already a few times he's not smart enough to just walk away.
I hope the kid gets his head on straight, but I would be extremely worried if I were the 6ers, if silly words cause the types of reactions we've seen of late what is a couple years or more of on court ineptitude going to do to his attitude? And they should be concerned as there is absolutely no evidence that the 6ers are an organization well positioned to guide a troubled young talent toward being a mature adult.
