Chris Finch the new head coach
Re: Chris Finch the new head coach
Here's what Nick Nurse said about Finch when the Raptors hired him as their assistant before this season:
"Obviously I've known him for a long time, right? Coached against each other, coached with each other in Britain, coached against each other in the D-League, so we've been on really similar paths, I think he's one of the best offensive minds in the NBA, so we're lucky to have him. I enjoy him from an overall perspective, I enjoy him from an overall basketball perspective, as well. He's a hell of a coach."
So there you go. We've hired an offensive guru. Not sure what that means for our defensive. :) Apparently, Finch's secret sauce is unpredictability. He said he wants his teams to be unpredictable offensively. Not sure exactly what that means. The best offensive teams I've seen over the years were very predictable, doing the same thing repeatedly and doing it really well. We'll see.

Good news for Finch then. The Wolves offense has been unpredictable for years now. One game we lose 140-131, the next we lose 87-81. :)

I was going to say does this Hinch bang on trash cans as well.

He has been an assistant for 10 years and has had a top 15 offense in 9 of the 10 years. So we'll see

At least he has a better resume than what Ryan Saunders had. Let me remind you of what was on Ryan's...
- Graduated from the University of Minnesota.
- Can tie his own shoes... sometimes.
- Father is Flip Saunders.
- Favorite movie is Like Mike.

Re: Chris Finch the new head coach
Finch has a solid resume, which as Cam pointed out isn't something Ryan had when he was hired as our head coach.
Nevertheless, the timing is weird. It's highly unusually, actually unheard of, to sign your permanent replacement to a multi-year deal the day you fire the guy he's replacing. Firing Ryan was overdue. In fact, he shouldn't have been hired in the first place. But we have a young up-and-coming top assistant on the bench who could have been elevated to the head coaching position and evaluated on an interim basis. This team isn't going to make the playoffs this season and It's not as if Finch was going to be hired by some other team yet this season.
This decision is so much like Gersson's growing list of blunders. It's not that Finch isn't an upgrade over Ryan or a reasonable choice on paper. It's just that Rosas didn't need to lock him up right now. He had time to try out Vanterpool, put some more thought into the decision and consider other potential candidates, including candidates who weren't available when Rosas previously considered Finch but hired Ryan. It's like the DLO deal. Acquiring DLO had merit based on DLO's potential and his friendship with KAT. But it made no sense for Rosas to give up the assets he relinquished to get him. At the time there were no reports of any other team showing interest in DLO, much less a willingness to part with a largely unprotected 1st round pick to get him. Signing Juancho might have made sense on a one-year minimum deal, but there was no sign of a bidding war for his services or anything else that would justify the contract Rosas gave him. Similar story when it comes to Ricky. That's why I don't think this will end well.
I like some of what I've read about Finch. I've watched interviews of Finch and comments he's made on game film. He's a self-described introvert and it shows on camera. He doesn't appear to have any charisma or gravitas. In fact, listening to him makes me sleepy. At least he doesn't seem jittery and out of his depth like Ryan Saunders. We'll see, but I think there are better choices out there like Atkins and Rosas should have considered and interviewed those other alternatives after the season while taking the opportunity to see what Vanterpool could do as interim head coach until then.

If the Wolves started winning games under the interim then he's stuck hiring the interim which was likely Vanterpool.

Any of you guys fans of the original "The Office" tv show from the UK?
If not, let me introduce you to Chris Finch.

Seriously, this character was a running joke. Just such a horribly inappropriate co-worker that at one point in the show, just referring to Chris Finch essentially became a joke itself!
Let's hope our Chris Finch is better than that guy.

Kind of disturbing that they wouldn't give Vanderpool as shot, and they will rightfully get raked over the coals by players across that league. Putting that aside I'm very excited that we actually moved on from Ryan and am curious to see what Finch brings.
