I loved him the first 5 games, and thought we were significantly better when he was on the court. Yes, he got pushed around by bigger guys like Gasol, but I also saw him altering a lot of shots. I haven't seen that since then.
But I don't agree that Flip's use of our ineffective zone starts with Gorgui. I think it clearly starts with the inability of Mo and Zach to stop the opposing guard's penetration. I don't find it coincidental that Gorgui's defense appears so much less effective since Ricky got hurt.
You also need to take into account our roster situation. Gorgui is likely being asked to play it safe, because if he gets into foul trouble we literally have no 6'10 or bigger players behind him right now. We simply can't afford having him pick up fouls when attempting to swat shots like he could if pek and turiaf were healthy. I'll reserve judgment for when there are actual Bigs behind him again.
I don't get why teams are so bad at the cap. It is not salaries that are bad. It is the length of contracts. We would be way better off giving Pek the max for 3 years then 12M for 5yr, but why on earth bargain against yourself. I know there was a bunch of here saying you do it for agent goodwill. That is BS. Only way this franchise gets on track is if I manage the cap.

His contract looks even worse now because the entire league is making shorter contracts the norm. Fortunately, the higher salary cap will hide his bloated contract a bit.
But alas, the Wolves are stuck with him for multiple seasons.

Thing is who cares what other teams are doing. What is good for you is all that matters.

1) With the new CBA... contracts are for fewer years.
2) It's VERY important to know what other teams are doing around the league.
3) Obviously, locking up an injury-prone guy to a longer deal when bidding against nobody else is not good. Maybe the Wolves should have been more diligent knowing what other teams were doing so they didn't have to bid against themselves so much.

Just so longstrangetrip can expand that ridiculously small sample size he's using in almost every post.
Ha, I know abe...but it's all I got to work with. 4 1/2 games isn't much to form a final conclusion that Ricky minus Love/Adelman was a vastly improved player, but it sure seemed like it to me. Believe me, I want that expanded size too.
Let me ask you this. 4 1/2 games after both Ricky and Martin got hurt, I concluded that the Wolves were a much worse basketball team without them and weren't going to win much until they returned. Was that opinion also too hasty?

I think that was a logical position to take. I don't think that would make the Wolves 9 - 8 with them, however.
