We also have to remember that being asked to be a rim running Center that can defend multiple positions requires a lot less technical skill than things like elite shooting, ball handling, and passing. We're not asking him to be a point guard or the next Jokic. But could he be the next Clint Capela? Perhaps so.Wolvesfan21 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 5:05 pmI kind of wonder how good he can get at certain things because he simply has only played for 4 years! Most all these other kids drafted have been playing for ten plus, maybe twenty plus, at least shooting around as kids, etc. I guess on the other hand, if he's already good after 4 years maybe his trajectory and ceiling is super high also! I mean who can pick up a sport and be on the top level in 4 years??? It's just unheard of.Monster wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 3:57 pmI was always an above average rebounder especially for my height. It may have been all those hours playing outside by myself running after my own misses. Having a quick jump didn't hurt either plus a pretty high motor. There definitely was a few years where I had the skill of going to where the ball was going to ne although I was also looking to box someone out as well.Wolvesfan21 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 3:38 pm Watched another few vids on him. He's much more athletic then Rudy, more fluid, smooth and quicker. I think his soccer background really shows in his ability to cut on a dime and recover to make a defensive play. It really pops in the highlight reels.
He's probably gifted enough physically right now to play on defense. Going to need to see how his shot develops over these next few years.
I didn't focus on his boards either, unsure how good or even great he is as a rebounder right now. But given his attributes, should be a positive over time. You can't teach height and quickness. Though there is really a "want to" and maybe a natural gift to simply judging where the ball bounces. Some guys seem to have it, while other don't. For instance I was pretty good all around in sports growing up, but man I sucked balls judging a baseball in the outfield. I was just bad at it. Like abnormally atrocious. I kind of think basketball boards could be like that, some people have the gift and it's easy for others it's tough.
It's simply easy to forget that people have various talent at various things in a sport. Like you I was not good in the outfield either and had a terrible arm. One summer I spent a lot of time camping around lakes and spent quite a bit of time throwing small rocks into the water. Somehow that process my arm strength and probably more the movement of the process got significantly better. Later that fall playing softball I was in the deep OF almost at the fence retrieving a ball and threw the ball in on a line deep into the infield and was looking around like WTF just happened. Lol Playing defense is a skill. Passing is a skill shooting etc. People can get better but just because someone works at it doesn't meant they will even be decent at it. This is why sometimes I think players that are kinda good at almost everything can have value.
Capela was a soccer player that eventually switched to basketball somewhere around 13 years old. Joan switched a year or 2 later in life but it's interesting you mentioned him. I would think if you were someone that really thought the game or had a good feel for soccer there might be some concepts or timing that could carry over from that sport. I saw a short article that Capela says he is a huge soccer fan and analyzes games not just watches them.Q-is-here wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 9:29 pmWe also have to remember that being asked to be a rim running Center that can defend multiple positions requires a lot less technical skill than things like elite shooting, ball handling, and passing. Exactly. He needs to star in his role, which in his prime might be a 25 MPG starting defensive specialist.
Lol, it is a fact that he was stunningly wrong more than right on draft picks. And you nailed it...hr never appreciated the importance of defense. Strictly a 1-way poster.
That's true, though I think his handle looks pretty damn impressive for someone just starting out in BB and being a 7 footer.Q-is-here wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 9:29 pmWe also have to remember that being asked to be a rim running Center that can defend multiple positions requires a lot less technical skill than things like elite shooting, ball handling, and passing. Way too early to know what his role will be. The defensive potential is already established and obvious. But as TC said, we don’t yet know what he can be offensively. What’s obvious watching video of Beringer is that he’s very nimble and coordinated with very nice footwork. I guess that shouldn’t be surprising given his soccer background. His handle looked surprisingly good for someone who hasn’t played basketball very long - actually it looked very good for a big who’s HAS been playing a long time. His shot also looks surprisingly good as well. TC and Matt both referred to Beringer as a ball of clay. He’s 18 with only 4 years of basketball under his belt. We’re nowhere near the point where we can project him as nothing more than a defensive specialist in his prime, which is around 7 or 8 years down the road. It will be a long time before we can project the role he’ll star in when he hits his prime. But I love that he’s someone we can envision becoming a star.
Well, I did say "might be" when describing his role. My point is that at #17, he doesn't have to become the next Giannis, Wemby, or even Chet Holmgren to be deemed a successful pick. Becoming a good defensive big seems like a reasonable most-likely case scenario. He very well may exceed that target.Lipoli390 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 27, 2025 12:36 pmWay too early to know what his role will be. The defensive potential is already established and obvious. I think a few of us were looking for a defensive big that could finish and rebound to add this off season. If the kid can do what Finch asks, he might see the floor, but I am not holding my breath. If Naz is still here, he can play the 4 and Beringer can be the 5. I would be OK with that!Q-is-here wrote: ↑Fri Jun 27, 2025 1:06 pmWell, I did say "might be" when describing his role.
