I don't like one guy filling dual roles. I feel like both roles are full time jobs for one singular person. I think Flip's biggest mistakes came from making moves from the mindset of the HC.

Once Love wanted out, it was clear the reset button had to be pressed. With a loaded western conference there was no way we could compete without Love considering we couldn't compete with him. Coaches always want to go all in on one season, while the front office has to look big picture. I think Flip failed in a few aspects of it. Here are some:
- Trading a first round pick for Thad Young. Yes Thad was a talented young player, but he had an opt out after the season limiting team control of him.
- Not dealing Kevin Martin at the deadline. While Martin wouldn't have brought a huge haul, I think he could have gotten something similar to what the Nuggets got for Aaron Afflalo. His stock was solid and a year later we released him for nothing.
- Trading a future first round pick for Payne. Rebuild teams stockpile first round draft picks, not trade them to fill a need.

Now on the whole Flip was an overwhelming success as a GM. We didn't see success with him as HC, but the team was incredibly young and injured during his tenure. I'm not a fan of a dual role guy, but if we want Van Gundy or Thibs we will have to give that title out.

I've said it before LST and it's been mentioned here but the dual role is sort of true but ultimately you have someone basically doing your front office job for you or a majority of it. Sure there is more burden but if the guy that gets to make the ultimate decisions makes the right one and has a clear and worthwhile vision that's what I care about and if he brings in good people to help him carry it out. Flip brought in Milt to help him and I think he went back and forth about whether he was going to be the coach of this team...at some point. That's highly debatable so Let's not get stuck on that. When Flip passed away he was barely over a year into his rebuild. We don't know know how he would have played out his duel roles. Let's give him credit for making the most of a lot of the situations he was put in. Picking Lavine is looking genius. Trading down the get Doeng and Bazz looks good even if there was better players available getting 2 guys with legit value at this point is plenty good. I think the reality of the "softening" on the duel role thing is that we see how it actauly plays out and it doesn't hurt that SVG and his crew seems to have played it reasonably well over there in Detroit.

I could see that and I would actually like it I always liked him. It seems like it was JVG that mentioned something in that vertical podcast about Fratello. I can't remember the connection though.

I like Mike Fratello. Love listening o him, a charismatic and a true basketball guy. He is another solid candidate for the POBO postion. I'm for dual rolls. Right now, I have him tie with JVG for the POBO position.

Browsing a couple other message boards I've come across a few posters saying rumor is that Thibs will be announced pobo and head coach on Friday the 22nd.
Take that for what it's worth .

Someone might have an ear close to the situation. And I'd ask if they posted this later in the day because JVG had his meeting with the Wolves earlier today.

Thanks for posting that, though.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that Sid Hartman announced on the Sports Show last night that Thibs would be hired by this Friday, so I suspect this is the source of this rumor. He may be 96 years old, but there still many in the community that put some faith in what he says...I'm no longer one of them.

Maybe Sid has the scoop on this one, I really don't know. I do know this. I will not be pleased if such an important decision is made before all potential candidates are considered and sufficient due diligence has been performed, and one week is clearly not enough time for that. This franchise has made decisions in a rash fashion in the past, and that is how you end up with 10 coaches in 11 years. Korn Ferry knows how to conduct a proper search, and it doesn't involve identifying just 2 candidates, interviewing each of them once, and then making a decision. Hopefully they can exert some influence over Glen here. But ultimately this will be his decision.

Color me skeptical about this rumor.

I think they are influencing Glen's decision. We've heard in the past that Glen wasn't in favor of one guy with dual roles. Well, KF is supposedly a proponent of the dual role position. Stein said today that the Wolves offered Thibs both positions, not Thibs demanding both positions. That's potential evidence of their influence right there.

And it's not necessarily a bad thing that they're making a quick and aggressive decision. It could mean that they listed Thibs and JVG as their two top candidates right off the bat and decided to target them first before moving on. If those are your two best, and you can get who you want, there is no need to further the search. That'd be like specifically looking for a center in last year's draft, there are two obvious choices in Towns and Okafor, you can actually get either of them, why would you continue to think about what Myles Turner could do for you? You have your guy. Go and get him. It's confident, it's quick, it leaves little room for overthinking. This quick hire would also give them more time to work with the FO and the new executive they're bringing in to get a plan in place for free agency and the draft.
