Well, it is better than signing him to a 5 year contract that we regret after 6 months. Sadly we didn't trade him sooner.

Here's a troubling excerpt from the latest Woj article on ESPN.com:

"Rival executives lobbing calls to Minnesota's front office on the possibility of trading for four-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler are getting their inquiries rebuffed, league sources told ESPN.

In the aftermath of Butler's trade request this week, Minnesota executives are telling teams that Butler's an elite player and that the franchise intends to keep him, league sources said.

Often that's an opening message that's followed with a query on what a prospective trade partner might offer in a hypothetical deal, but that hasn't been the case in the Timberwolves' dialogues with teams late this week, sources said.

Nevertheless, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor has become fully engaged in the decision-making process on a potential Butler trade and is far more open to the idea of orchestrating a deal than president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau and GM Scott Layden, league sources said."

According to Woj, Thibodeau's unwillingness to entertain deals for Butler is serious and not just the usual posturing. I'm serious when I say that Thibodeau has mental health issues. Taylor needs to fire him now because Thibodeau at this point is all about Thibodeau, not the team. Moreover, Thibodeau has an unyielding, stubborn obsession with Butler and the other former Bulls players he's assembled here. It is time to move on from Butler and apparently everyone can see it but Thibodeau. So it's also time (has been for a while) to move on from Thibodeau.

This is no time to hang on to dreams of winning with a team built around Butler. Jimmy absolutely positively wants out and our star of the future, Towns, wants Jimmy gone as well. Even if Thibodeau is posturing, which Woj's sources isn't true, this is not a time to send a "we're keeping him" message. This is a time to actively engage as many suitors as possible to creating a bidding situation and create as much market value for Butler as possible. You entertain offers from teams and let the other teams know there's interest. You have an open active dialogue with as many teams as possible and continue the process until you're convinced you have the best offer you can get from one of those many teams. Unfortunately, Thibodeau never worked in a front office, much less been the head of one, before coming here and he's never been in any other executive, management or other role negotiating deals or making executive management decisions. Moreover, his devotion to the long-range best interest of the franchise is severely compromised by his dual role as head coach, especially with his coaching tenure now in a precarious position.

Taylor needs to get his head out of his ass and fire Thibodeau. He'd have to rely on Layden, which doesn't thill me, but Layden is respected around the League and has experience heading a front office. Preferably, Taylor would bring hire a new PBO quickly -- poaching the Spurs, Celtics or Jazz organization by taking one of their top assistants. In any event, this status quo with Thibodeau calling the shots at this critical juncture is totally unacceptable.

it is frightening to watch this thing burning to the ground. Glen must have somebody he trusts that is telling to make a move, right?

Perhaps he's getting his ducks in a row before making a move. But man, how could anyone possibly see us opening up camp with all the current actors in tact!? I have no idea how much pull a guy like Ethan Casson (current CEO on the business side) has, but he must have a line into Taylor. It's his people that need to organize and facilitate Media Day. He and his team must be in total despair right now.

What is more frightening, that Thibs wants to keep Jimmy or that Taylor wants to be actively involved?

This franchise has been going nowhere for a while and it all points back to Taylor. I really see the only way out for now is to let Thibs take his lumps in this process. If Taylor wants to fire him and set up an interim now, so be it. But I don't want Taylor with his hands in any basketball decisions. Yuck.

I agree with this sentiment (I assume you were serious!). I don't know if Thibs and/or Butler will be here this season, but it will work out and we will be competing for the playoffs.

It just sucks that this turmoil is going on right now. But I guess we should not be surprised considering the turmoil has been smoking the entire offseason...
