I would take the risk on the higher ceiling RJ Hampton with that pick over Anthony if both are still there. The Porter Jr. pick is paying dividends for the Nuggets taking the risk on the former highly ranked player who fell in the draft. I think RJ can be that same guy in the right situation and for us he'd be able to come off the bench running the second unit with the potential to be a long-term fit next to Russell due to his size.
Hampton will be a stud. Has all the tools. High IQ and motor.
I watched all the video of Hampton I could find on the Internet over the weekend. I agree with you. He has a huge upside and the full package - positional size, athleticism and skill. He has that blow-by 1st and 2nd step that could make him special, especially with his size and handle. If he's available at #17 I'd grab him unless the Wolves have already taken Edwards or Ball at #1.
R.J. Hampton actually reminds me of a less springy, raw Zach LaVine at this stage of his career. There's definitely upside there and I like him, but whether I would select him at 17 obviously depends on what we do with that first pick and who else is picked within those 15 picks as I have guys that I like more than Hampton too.
Lip, after watching some more of Hampton, do you better understand why I think his draft stock is comparable or similar to LaMelo Ball's? Drafting for skills and physical tools without seeing much actual production or refinement. It's like buying a brand new car based on an advertisement without test driving it.
Cam - I definitely see your point. I still think Ball is more of a virtuoso as an offensive playmaker than any other PG prospects in the draft. But Hampton strikes me as a better potential scorer and defender than Ball. I think Killian Hayes has an excellent feel for the game and a better perimeter shooter than Ball. I think Haliburton is almost equal to Ball as a playmaker and he's a much better shooter off the catch. Kira Lewis is super fast. And none of those other PG prospects have the Ball family baggage or draft reviews questioning their motor.
I put a lot of weight on productivity/stats when evaluating prospects. And Ball had some pretty impressive NBL stats, averaging 17 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.7 steals. But his 38% FG shooting and 25% 3-point shooting are big red flags for me. Questions about his motor, at least on the defensive end, raise another red flag. Then there's daddy Ball. I'm open to drafting Edwards or Wiseman. But I'd stay away from Ball. If I were intent on drafting a PG, I'd draft Killian Hayes, RJ Hampton, Kira Lewis or Tyrell Terry.
at 17 and/or 33 they need to take a guy who has a really good skill. If the 17th pick is generally meh but he's really good at rebounding, take him. If he's bad at defense but elite at shooting, take him. If the guy doesn't have much of an offensive game but plays analytically pleasing defense, take him. The rest will sort itself out in terms of fit and scheme. Don't take a guy who looks like he can physically fit in, but sucks at most things and hangs off upside.
If that's Jalen Green or Precious Achiuwa at 17, whatever, or they stash a Pokusevski
I'll say this: If the Wolves don't go guard at #1 and Maxey is there at 17, take him. Calipari is smarter than anyone in the Wolves organization when it comes to identifying talent. Cal's only really had a handful of duds in the last 10-11 years or so.

...and now we see Murray blowing up too after a solid, but unspectacular, last couple of years.

That's seems like too much for the Knicks to give up IMHO. FWIW Bobby Portis is a young reasonably productive player but the last I knew he wasn't good at defense punched his own teammate and doesn't block shots. I'm not against adding him but he isn't a guy I would be targeting either. Honestly I'm hoping some team gets super giddy for one of the top guys and we can extract a really nice return like you are wishing for here. I still can't believe Kahn took Flynn over extracting something from another team (Knicks) that wanted Curry.

For me, any deal with the Knicks for the first overall pick needs to include Mitchell Robinson and the No. 8 pick in this year's draft.
That would be a quality return for the Wolves in my view while the Knicks significantly move up from two draft slots. In the end, I still think standing pat and taking James Wiseman would be the better move, but I would have to consider this for the value it brings now and in the future. And the Knicks may value the potential of a LaMelo Ball over any other asset involved in this trade.

Do you think there's any chance of moving down a few spots and still getting Wisemen?
