He's been my favorite prospect dating back several weeks. At that time his mock draft range was pretty wide - 8 to 21. But his draft stock has risen since then as more teams have had a closer look at him, including at the combine. He's now reported to be as high as #6 on some draft boards.

The only way to truly appreciate his value is to watch video of him. There's a fluidity and intelligence to his game that you rarely see in players, especially 19 year olds. He's a gifted ball-handler who has the game of a PG and the frame of a long SF. He's a terrific defender, both on-ball and off-ball with very quick hands. He shows a high basketball IQ, getting good position, playing angles well, making smart passes and not biting on pump fakes. And you can see all of that as he's playing against a lot of older players, many with some NBA experience. Watching him interviewed adds to the positive vibe he exudes on the court. He is really smart, comfortable in his own skin and quietly intense and competitive.

Behind the video of his play and interviews, he has some eye-popping metrics, especially if you see him as a PG, which is how I view him. He is 6'6 without shoes and has an 8'9 standing reach along with a 6'10.5 wingspan. That's extraordinary length for a PG. Although his 34" vertical isn't spectacular, it's more than adequate for a player with an 8'9 standing reach. More importantly, he scores very high on other measures of athleticism - ones that count more, especially for a PG. He had the best time in the combine's shuttle run and one of the best lane agility times (8th best). All of that means he has great small-area and lateral quickness, which Kevin McHale has referred to as the most important measure of athleticism for NBA players.

It's true that he struggled with his 3-point shoot, hitting only 25.5% of them, but his shooting form looks solid. Moreover, he shot 45% from the field overall and nearly 74% form the line. Importantly, he really excels in the do-shit categories, averaging 6 rebounds and 2 steals in 31 minutes per game. Those are great stats that tend to translate from lower levels to the NBA. He also averaged just short of a block per game. Again, he did all of that playing against G-League competition before he turned 19 years old. Would I take Banchero, Holmgren, Jabari Smith or Jaden Ivey before Daniels? Yes. But Daniels would probably be my guy after those four.

I would just encourage you to want a lot of video of this guy. The more you see, the more impressed I think you'll be. Unfortunately, I don't see the Wolves having a realistic shot at drafting him because the secret is out. :)

Yep. I wasn't listing them in order of value. Just listed them as they came to mind. I agree with your ranking.

Lip my guess is to some extent you started your list based on salary.

Seriously why is nobody listing Vanderbilt?

While Vanderbilt is an asset and should be ranked on here, I think Vando, despite being young and improving, is close to what he'll max out as.

Actually, I agree that Vanderbilt has positive trade value, at least as part of a package. Using Q's ranking, which I like, I'd slot Vanderbilt in after Bolmaro and before this year's second-rounders.

I would trade Jarred Vanderbilt for a first-round pick if some team came asking about him. I genuinely enjoy watching him play with energy, but his ineptitude offensively drives me crazy and makes life more difficult for the four teammates he has on the floor. Specifically, when a teammate creates a good look for him near the paint and he's too uncomfortable and/or unskilled to consistently convert the basket. The same goes for his inability to routinely make putback layups on offensive rebounds. He simultaneously adds possessions for Minnesota, but also takes point off the board for them.

He has value on this team, but I would trade him at that price. This would also be an intriguing draft to make such a move. However, I don't expect him to be leaving this off-season.

Yeah, this ^^ is exactly the issue with Vando offensively. We often think of his lack of an outside shot as his biggest offensive liability, but I think it's what you describe above. Compare him to Brandon Clarke - another PF with zero outside shot - and you can see the vast difference. Clarke is an adept finisher, whether it's going up for big dunks or making those little 5-foot flip shots. It makes a huge difference.

Vando is a classic case of a player that helped us get from Point A (crappiness) to Point B (goodness). He's not the guy that will get us to Point C (greatness) as the second starting big. The question is can Connelly find that guy?

I agree, Cam. Question for you is whether you think there's a team that would swap a 1st round pick this summer in exchange for Vando? I'm not sure. But I can see Vando as a part of a package that either brings back another lower first-round pick or moves us up in the draft. Either would be a good use of Vando as an asset.

Vando shouldn't start, but if you get rid of him, there goes a lot of our toughness. We don't need to get pushed around more than we already are.

Good point, Cool. I don't want the Wolves to "get rid of him." In my view, it's a matter of who/what the Wolves would get in return. My preference is to keep Vando as an energy big off the bench and replace him in the starting lineup with a big acquired through free agency or trade. I would want the starting big we acquire to bring more size and toughness to the roster. If it were up to me, I'd shop Naz Reid before I'd shop Vando. But both should be potentially on the table for the right deal.

Re: Possible Wolves Draft Day Trades

With the NBA draft-related trade market beginning to heat up, I thought I'd come back to this thread with some thoughts on potential Wolves trades to move up in the draft - either from #40 or from #19.

I'd like to see the Wolves package a couple of their 2nd-round picks and Naz to move up from #19, or move up from 40 into the 31-36 range - maybe even into the lower end of the 1st round. Naz would be an attractive get for a young rebuilding team. He still has plenty of upside, but he's also proven himself to be an NBA rotation player. And he has a very cheap contract.

Here's a list of some higher 2nd-round or lower 1st-round picks that might be gettable in exchange for Naz and some or all of our 2nd-round picks:

Spur's #25 (They have 9, 20, 25 & 38. They won't keep them all. Might like proven guy Naz & 2nd-round flex)
Houston's #26 (They have 3, 17 & 26. Early rebuild so might keep them all, but might like proven guy Naz)
Grizzlies' #29 (They have 22 and 29. Definitely in win-now mode. Suspect they'd prefer Naz over #29)
Pacers' #31 (They have 6 and 31. Not sure what they want to do. But Naz and 48 for 31 makes sense)
OKC's #30 or 34 (They have 2, 12, 30 & 34. Could see them swapping 30 or 34 for proven guy Naz +#48)
Orlando's #32 or 35 (They have 2, 32, 35. I think they'd like to make progress. Naz helps more than 32 or 35)
Portland's #36 (They have 7, 36, 57. Reportedly shopping #7 for win-now guy. Naz and 50 for 36 makes sense)

Here's a list of some potential higher 1st-round picks that might be gettable in exchange for #19, Naz and some assortment of our 2nd-round picks, although depending on how high the Wolves might need to include a future lottery-protected 1st:

Bulls #18 (I would think #19 and 48 would be enough to move up to 18. Shouldn't have to include Naz)
Rockets #17 (#19 and 48 or 40 should be enough. Houston has no 2nd-round picks, but they have 3 1sts)
Hawks #16 (Looks like they'll deal this pick to Jazz for Gobert. But maybe Jazz would swap for 19, Naz and 40)
Hornets #15 (They have 13 & 15, which makes 15 expendable since they're in win-now mode. Naz would fit well)
Cavs #14 (They have 14 & 39. Another win-now mode team that should like Naz off the bench)

There could be potential DLO deals with the Wizards or Knicks to move up from 19 to 10 or 11. Or perhaps there's a package the Wolves could offer that would be attractive enough to swap picks with Indiana or Portland into the #5 or 7 slot. I doubt it, but who knows.

This is a lot of great work, Lip! This isn't entirely responsive to your question but here's what I'm thinking. I don't think they trade DLO, they just won't find the value anywhere. Naz maybe, to move up a little bit to get someone they like. I think they keep Beasley unless someone falls in love with him.

I could be completely wrong but I'm betting some may be disappointed with the lack of action. The Wolves probably like a lot of players in the draft, so could just sit tight and draft at 19, or maybe use one of the seconds to move up a bit... not sure who that trading partner might be. I could also see trading one of the seconds for a future 2nd, instead of making three selections this year.

I think Connelly is a "no short cuts, no big swings" kind of GM. I think he'll have a solid draft, and then will be active to find a free agent big that will start for the Wolves.
