Re: Iowa Wolves
Watched the condensed game of the win against the Suns.
I gotta watch a full game and see what Nowell looks like in full action. The condensed games make him look like he is seriously way beyond this level. Dude is smooth and skilled with the ball.
Just another double double off the bench for my guy Jordon Murphy and he keeps hitting those 3's.
Tyus Battle has been doing some work with more minutes with other wings playing with the NBA team.
McLaughlin was whipping the ball all over the place in this game. I'm not sure all those passes are gonna work at the next level but he has some ability and creativity as a passer. Naz messed up one of his assists but got the rebound and then dimed up someone cutting to the basket.
Wigginton is an intriguing player. Can he be efficient enough and play defense?

Re: Iowa Wolves
Naz Reid putting up some pretty solid numbers so far in Iowa after 8 games:
32.5 MPG
20.4 PPG
10.3 RPG
2.5 APG
1.9 SPG
2.0 BPG
2.6 TOs
He's shooting 33% on nearly 6 3-pt attempts per game and 48% overall.
Remember that Naz was an undrafted rookie that is only 20 years old and one year of college under his belt.

Re: Iowa Wolves
Reid called up...
Nowell with another nice efficient scoring game last night. 25 points on 17 shots. It's interesting, as it appears he is a bit of a shot maker from a variety of distances. He definitely has a mid-range/close mid-range floater/bank game. No clue if any of this can translate at the next level, but good to see him have some success in Iowa.

I just watched the condensed game. Nowell is so advanced in how he gets to his spots. Hesitations changing speeds has plenty of shots in his bag he can go to once he gets to the paint. I can't put my finger on who he reminds me of as a player but yeah he looks pretty good offensively.
Jordon Murphy started and was matched up against our old friend Justin Patton. The Wolves don't play anyone even Reid that's over 6'10" but Patton looks tall and long. He looks to have dropped weight and is skinny now. Murphy put up a double double which isn't a surprise but there were a couple times he scored on Patton one time taking him off the dribble spinning and housing Patton and then dunking the ball while Patton was falling. Murphy gives up a lot of length but the guy keeps producing. He hit a late shot clock 3.
McClaughlin seems to be the guy that heats up in the fourth quarter. I watched the ugly end of their previous game and he was just getting buckets late in that game also and the Kings were supposedly keying on him. That Kings broadcast was all out they had a sideline reporter for the G-league game!
Kelan Martin made some hard shots. He went 5-15... he did chip in 8 rebounds.
Barry Brown was cooking in this game.

Yes, Nowell seems to have a pretty advanced scoring game, but we'll see. The defenses are a lot quicker and longer at the next level. He reminds me a bit of Jamal Murray may be? Obviously not as heralded as a prospect, but similar in that he doesn't have elite athleticism or size, but seems to have a nice touch and feel.
Kelan Martin has been a disappointment. It seems like it's all or nothing with that guy from a shooting perspective. He has too many goose eggs from long range, both in Iowa and when he was up with the main team. If he isn't a prolific shooter, there aren't enough other things he does well to be of much help longer term.

I think Nowell is an elite NBA athlete. He had a 32" standing vertical and 38.5 step vertical in the 2019 combine. Those numbers are elite. He had a top 10 agility time of 10.76 along with excellent shuttle run and sprint times of 3.13 each. He doesn't have elite length with his 6'7.75 wingspan, but that's decent for an NBA SG and terrific for an NBA PG. Most importantly, he was an elite shooter in college - both inside and outside the college arc - as a sophomore, hitting 50% of his FG attempts on a pretty hefty volume and over 40% of his 3-point attempts on moderate volume. Players with that kind of accuracy in college tend to be excellent shooters in the NBA unless they're unusually small or slow. Nowell has elite or near-elite athleticism/quickness and average length for an NBA SG. Now Nowell is putting up similar numbers in the G-League. Of course, he'll have to prove it on the court against real NBA competition. But the same goes for Culver and he was a really bad 3-point and free-throw shooter in college.

Lip has seemingly caught PJ Fleck fever throwing "elite" around!!!! Lol jk. I don't see those numbers putting Nowell as an elite athlete but a pretty good one. He probably doesn't get enough credit as an athlete which I'm guessing is the point Lip is getting at. He is probably the best athlete of the Wolves perimeter players or maybe Wigginton but he looks so much smaller and sort of a weird player in some ways. I don't think the Wolves have wildly athletic players on that roster though. Nowell's skill with the ball and scoring ability and seemingly looking like a seasoned pro at scoring that sets him apart. He looks more legit than other scorers that I have seen at this level. It's going to be interesting to see when they give him a shot at the next level what he can do.

Yeah, whatever Nowell's combine tests may have said, I don't view him as an elite athlete by NBA standards. But that doesn't matter as much as skill anyway, as we've seen countless times over the years.
I think the takeaway is that his athleticism and physical profile won't hold him back - it's certainly not a liability. It just isn't a huge asset IMO.

Re: Iowa Wolves
Nowell picked up where he left off after a 4-day break and scorerd 27 points on 9-15 shooting, 4-5 from 3. He was a team-leading +29 and rebounded and assisted well too. He continues play consistently good ball down there. Very encouraging.
