I don't think we can make a trade beforehand since we owe a 2018 first rounder, correct (aka the Stepien Rule)? I guess my question is when does this rule expire - the second we make our pick or do we actually have to sign the player?

Assuming Isaac, Tatum, and Jackson are off the board, I really wonder if Thibs and Layden will snag DSJ and then trade down to the highest bidder, as it appears there are a number of teams just behind us that need a PG. I would think Dallas, New York, and perhaps Detroit (with the uncertainty around Reggie Jackson) may all be teams willing to trade up for him and they all draft a few slots behind us where we could still potentially get Monk, Zach Collins, OG, or (shivers) Markkanen.

I think at this point, as others have pointed out, it's silly to make a trade anyway until things play out. So even if the Stepien Rule didn't apply to us, it just seems smart to have the discussions, discuss potential scenarios, but don't actually pull the trigger on anything until we see who is available at 7.

Q -- Right now, that's what I'd do and I'll go out on a limb and guess that's what Thibs and Layden will do. Of course, the question is whether they really like Markkenan. Interesting to see all the mocks that have Markkenan going to the Wolves. I wonder if that's based on inside information or just guesswork. I'll take Thibs at his word that he'll draft based on talent, not need. If that's the case, I can't believe he'd take Markkenan. If drafting on talent, Dennis Smith would be the obvious choice, following in my view by Zach Collins. Smith seems to be the logical choice, followed by a trade down to the highest bidder. With at least two, possibly three teams immediately behind us in need of a PG and Ntilikina the only high upside PG left on the board after Smith, I would think we could get a pretty good return and still get a talented prospect in the draft.

Taking DSJ and hoping to trade him is a dangerous game unless we have a deal in place. Frank maybe higher on some of their boards and if not, its probably close. Frank would be higher on my board.

That is what I would do also. And if we can't get a trade. Well we might be drafting the guy with the highest upside.

I don't think it's that dangerous. Dunn can play the 2 and we could make it work if we had to. It would actually be an interesting contrast to have DSJ coming off the bench and be a scoring PG. Maybe give him some minutes with the starters to see how it looks with a modern NBA PG playing with them. I don't think it'd be a problem trading him, but it wouldn't be a disaster if the right deal never came along.
