If we recall correctly, the starting five of Teague, Butler, Wiggins, Gibson, and Towns was one of the most productive starting fives in all of basketball, but the Wolves as a team fell apart when the reserves came in games. Keep in mind that was also with a borderline useless version of Wiggins too.
If the Wolves had locked Butler into a long-term deal and we still had him and Towns we'd potentially be right where we need to be in terms of NBA duos and contending in the West. Obviously, moves would have needed to be made to round out a real bench and tweak the starting lineup to give it more shooting, but that's a lot easier than scouring for star players -- which is exactly the position the Wolves are right back in.
We're in that position because we made the Butler deal.
If that Butler deal was never made, the Wolves likely re-sign LaVine and lock themselves into a roster that has no chance of ever getting a player of Butler's caliber. So, you're right, the Wolves would be in an even worse position without the Butler deal. Good correction, Cool.
I don't know what would have happened if we hadn't made the deal. And I didn't hate the deal at the time. I wouldn't have made it, but I didn't hate it.
But in retrospect it wasn't a good move. The assets we had could have been used in many different ways. In the hands of a competent GM it's possible we could be in much better shape. But it's all history now and I just wish I felt better about Rosas and the job he is doing.

This I can get behind, we all have different opinions on the Butler trade, but in the end nothing we can do about it now. I really hope Rosas can turn this organization around but through 1 offseason it looks like he has made 1 good move and that was Layman who is not a needle mover.
Like every GM before him, if he dosen't draft well his time in Minnesota will be short. Through 30ish games his draft picks haven't looked good in the NBA. Hopefully they improve and he drafts better in the future.

I tune out for a few months, only to come back and see that Doper has joined the dark side!!??!!??

National media guy Nate Jones on the wolves. Tweet liked by Howard Beck.
It's funny. The Wolves have made the playoffs and finished with a winning record ONE time in the last 15 years. That was when Jimmy Butler was there. KAT and crew hated him because he told them about themselves and what they needed to change to win. Everything he said was true.

Its all true. We should have given Jimmy the keys to the kingdom. Somehow I feel the reality was that Glen wouldn't do it. At least that experience made us know that KAT and Wiggins can be the 2nd and 3rd option on a team that loses in the first round.
