Holiday probably fits well with the other guys they have. That team came together pretty well down the stretch last year especially defensively and with Simon's gone it could open up more scoring opportunities for other guys. That's a lot of money though but if it helps them make a jump it might be worth it.

Seems like a pretty bad deal for Portland. If nothing else, Simons had trade value as a relatively young, pretty talented player on an expiring contract. I like Jrue Holiday and had him on my list as potential acquisition targets for the Wolves but I wasn’t sure because of the combination of his age and contract. He makes far less sense for a team that didn’t even make the playoffs-in tournament. Jrue seems like the sort of player you trade for if you’re on the threshold of a championship, but even then he’s not the player he used to be and is at an age where you can’t be sure what you’ll get from him or for how long you’ll get it. As I thought about him as a potential Wolves’ trade target, the length of his contract increasingly turned me off even though I think he could have helped the Wolves at a position of need to get over the hump next season.

I just keep coming back to the reality that trading value for stars in their mid to late 30s on big contracts is almost always a bad move.

I think Boston was fortunate to dump Jrue's contract and actually get picks back. I think Portland is ready to put Scoot in the starting lineup next to Sharpe, but couldn't Portland just have demoted Simons to sixth man. Maybe, Portland thinks Jrue will be the veteran leader they need but it also comes at the cost of missed opportunities in the free agency market the next two offseasons.

The New Orleans Pelicans are trading CJ McCollum, Kelly Olynyk and a future second-round pick to the Washington Wizards for Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey and the No. 40 pick, sources tell ESPN.

Pelicans were the hardest hit team to injuries, but could be a playoff team if everyone was healthy. They need a new coach too as Willie Green is terrible. I'd offer Finchy who previously was an assistant there for pick 7.

Interesting deal. I'm not sure I get it from NO perspective but maybe they just wanted to get younger and hope the positive that Poole showed this year was real.

Olynyk is a guy I've always liked. He would be a nice backup big but he makes a decent chunk of money so I'm not sure it makes sense to deal for him unless it was part of a bigger trade.

Good post. I think what they did makes sense to some extent but like you said there might have been another opportunity that was better. Jrue I think is still a really good player if you want help winning basketball games and he might be a good player to help some of their young guys make progress as they develop. It's expensive though. We will see. Note how Detroit made a pretty good jump with some vets added and Jrue might be a bigger impact player than any of the vets players Detroit added.

Boston is doing reasonably well for themselves moving salary and even getting some worthwhile players in return. It's kinda impressive.
