Connelly will sign a 5-year, $40M-plus deal that includes ownership equity, sources said. Massive deal and franchise changing move for the Timberwolves. -- via Adrian Wojnarowski

Even if it doesn't work out, I won't complain because the wolves are trying to become a legit top tier franchise and these moves do it!

Hard to know what the equity stake is. But I think $40M over five years is reasonable for someone who is clearly one of the top 5 PBOs in the League. That's $8M per year. It's less than the full MLE. :). Seriously, teams pay players far more than the $40M contract Connelly's getting. Hard to find fault with paying $8M a year to the guy who signs those players. As for the equity stake, I suspect it's pretty small and it only has value if the value of the team goes up and he sells his stake after it's gone up. I'm guessing he got something like a $5M stake.

It's sort of like getting stock options as a hiring inducement. I was once given $30,000 in stock options to take a job with a communications company back in 2000. The value of those options increased to over $120,000 in about a year during the dot.com boom, but I couldn't exercise them for 3 years under the terms of my agreement. By the time the 3-year period lapsed, the dot.com bubble burst, the company's filed chapter 11 and my options were worth zero. I think Connelly will do better with his equity stake than I did with mine. :)

Lip, sorry to hear about your stock options travails, but mostly, I'm sorry that neither you and your sidekick TheSP didn't get the front office job! The good news is you get to keep posting here!

Big news for this franchise. We're becoming a serious, modern-day franchise. Setting aside his individual prowess as a talent evaluator, my hope is that players and agents league-wide take notice and Minnesota is on the map as a potential destination.

Just a final hat-tip to Gersson Rosas, as he's given Connelly one hell of a head start here.

It's not like Glen Taylor hasn't given a team executive an ownership stake before. Flip's family still has their small share right?

As for the money I'm not exactly in the know but I'm pretty sure plenty of top high level companies make way more than 8 million a year. If Connelly is a really good POBO operations like he has a legit track record of being then like you said it's absolutely worth it and if I'm a Nuggets fan I'm pissed off at Ownership for letting him go. Maybe they end up with Booth or whoever that does a great job like Connelly did after Ujiri left (just read he is making 15 million a year) but man that seems like a roll of the dice I wouldn't want to do if I had the money to just pay someone that I knew was really good.

Well what happens next? I just sit back and watch and wait. I don't think most MN sports fans including myself know what it's like to have someone this competent taking over their sports team and knowing apparently ownership is going to be willing to pay to put forth a high level product. Where am I Telosa? Lol

He's got some big time decisions to make right away. After KAT makes all NBA, he has to decide what to do about offering him the Super Max extension. I wouldn't do it, but realize that opinion will be in the minority on this board. So that will be interesting. And then there is the subject of our favorite polarizing player, DLO. I'm going to guess the new owners and Connelly will decide the franchise can't get to the place it wants with DLO having such a large role. I anticipate if they don't trade him, this will be his last year as a Timberwolve. Just my opinion.
