Way too early to know what his role will be. The defensive potential is already established and obvious. But as TC said, we don’t yet know what he can be offensively. What’s obvious watching video of Beringer is that he’s very nimble and coordinated with very nice footwork. I guess that shouldn’t be surprising given his soccer background. His handle looked surprisingly good for someone who hasn’t played basketball very long - actually it looked very good for a big who’s HAS been playing a long time. His shot also looks surprisingly good as well. TC and Matt both referred to Beringer as a ball of clay. He’s 18 with only 4 years of basketball under his belt. We’re nowhere near the point where we can project him as nothing more than a defensive specialist in his prime, which is around 7 or 8 years down the road. It will be a long time before we can project the role he’ll star in when he hits his prime. But I love that he’s someone we can envision becoming a star.
Well, I did say "might be" when describing his role. My point is that at #17, he doesn't have to become the next Giannis, Wemby, or even Chet Holmgren to be deemed a successful pick. Becoming a good defensive big seems like a reasonable most-likely case scenario. He very well may exceed that target.
I think a few of us were looking for a defensive big that could finish and rebound to add this off season. If the kid can do what Finch asks, he might see the floor, but I am not holding my breath. If Naz is still here, he can play the 4 and Beringer can be the 5. I would be OK with that!
The dev coaches need to have Dilly and Beringer in the gym practicing the pick and roll for the next 4 months. The more reps the better!
Yeah, sitting here right now, we have the same near-term holes we had exiting the playoffs: 1) A more balanced big rotation that isn't one legit defensive Center and two offensive-oriented PFs and 2) another ball-handler somewhere between the huge age and experience chasm of Conley and Dillingham.
The offseason isn't over yet and we still have free agency and potential trades.
Back to Beringer and your point about he and Dillingham getting gym time. I'm really liking the potential long-term ceiling of this squad when you think about the complimentary skills of Dillingham, Beringer, Shannon, and Clark added to the Ant/Jaden/Reid mix. Could be a really fun main core some day as Conley, Rudy, and Randle eventually age out or are traded.

I watched the game below to see some game action of Joan Beringer
https://youtu.be/FFv6hTO3UKQ?si=g4RGX-6HeDamm-0D
The first thing that jumped out at me is his lower body. His thighs look pretty big and is calves and ankles definitely are not twigs. Predictablely his upper body in terms of arms etc is thinner but physically he looks like a guy that eventually shouldn't get tossed around because he doesn't have a strong enough base.
He has really long strides running down the court. This led me to wonder about his quickness but several times he was striding down court then downshifted and was into quick small movements getting into position.
He was in constant motion looking to set screens cut going after balls. He also in general knew what he was supposed to be doing while doing all that.
He really crashed after the glass and at times seemed to be going where he though thr ball was and picked a good line to get the ball. He did misstike his jump ones and another ball awkwardly went through his hands but it was a rebound that came at him at an unusual trajectory.
The first half the team went on a run while he was in there. The 2nd half wasn't as good and he didn't play much but that was also partly because for a lengthy stretch they were playing well and so the coach probably stuck with what was working. They ended up losing the game.
Early in the game he went to closet he gap on a guy driving and ended up with a bad foul. There was another possession that wasn't particularly great on defense but I don't remember exactly what happened. Other than that he seemed to do what I woukd expect and he had a really nice block coming from outside his area to get someone. He also had a block on a guy well after the whistle that looked kinda impressive.
I didn't really research the team they were playing but Bertrans was on that team.

Monster, I posted earlier in this thread that a draft expert commented on Dane Moore's pod that Joan was not some skinny teenager. He said he measured a legit 260 at the combine, and doesn't shy away from contact. And we can expect him to get bigger, hopefully without losing his quickness.

I think you might be getting the weight mixed up with Rocco who came in at 257lbs. Beringer weighted in at 235. Neither guy is slight although I would say Beringer looks to have a more stout lower body. For someone as long as Rocco I think I'm OK with him being a little more light in that regard because it would likely help move better and might help him stay healthier.

Didn't confuse him with Rocco, but I had the wrong weight. Yeah, it's 235. But Tyler Metcalf and Dane Moore raved about how physical and big he is already, and said he easily projects to put on another 10 pounds without losing quickness. Metcalf said he's not the skinny type teenager center who can get pushed around by bigger centers, but that he's a guy who can easily handle contact.

He looks lighter than 235 lbs. to me, but even if that isn't legit, Chet Holmgren has demonstrated that you can be a defensive force as a big without having much bulk. If anything, Chet still looks a bit sickly to me, yet he is excellent at staying vertical, absorbing contact and generally bothering shots even if they aren't recorded as actual blocks. Now is he doubled over in pain half the time after guys putting their shoulder into him? Yes. But damn he sticks with it despite the punishment he takes.
So regardless of whether Beringer is 235 lbs. or not, or whether he can add another 10-15 lbs. (which yes he can), he seems to have the physical tools RIGHT NOW to be a plus defensive player. Any additional strength he adds in the next couple of years is just gravy.

That's a name I haven't heard in a while!
Let's just assume for a sec that he never really develops any sort of offensive game outside of put backs, lobs, and running the floor. If that's the case, then his floor is probably someone like Jaxson Hayes and his ceiling is Clint Capela in his prime.
But his ceiling gets raised if he can develop one or two reliable go-to moves/shots on offense. I think free throw accuracy will be big for him too since he may eventually be a handful around the hoop and could draw a lot of fouls. Teams will just foul a guy like Mitchell Robinson or even Rudy if they get the ball around the hoop because it turns it into a 1-point possession on average, which actually isn't bad defense.

Dilly was interviewed trust and was asked who has been impressive in practice and he said “the rookie is solid, beringer is cold, not going to lie he is super solid”
I’m excited

I was about to post the same thing! But he didn't say Beringer, he said "Joan" twice if I heard it right.
I'm excited, too!
