Cur-tiiiiiiiiiii! Pure, unadulterated superfly soul genius...we lost him way too early. Funny, I just heard this song on The Loft as I was driving around town yesterday, and made a mental note to go buy that album in vinyl...gotta go find it tomorrow.

Vinyl is coming back isn't it LST? My millennial nephew recently bought a turntable, so I immediately ordered "Kind of Blue" and sent it his way for Christmas. He loved it.

You're a terrific uncle!. I was just listening to Flamenco Sketches Sunday night and thinking how much better it sounds on vinyl. I hardly ever listen to my CDs anymore.

I've always loved music and I am an album type guy. I love to listen to the whole album and see how they put it together. It's newer but my favorite album I have listened to recently is "Some Nights" by Fun. It basically an album that sounds like it's the spundtrack from a musical. FYI there are a couple F-bombs.

A few years ago I picked up an old portable school record player at a garage sale that the Cat Shelter a I volunteer at used to have periodically. I also picked up some vinyl also. Nebraska is a great place to get Czech polka. Lol It is fun to pull out that player and listen to every once in a while. It's much better after I took it apart and cleaned it because it had a random piece of paper in the speaker cavity that was making it crackle like crazy.

I think one of the things I like about getting those old albums is that you get a big piece of artwork. The price has gone up over and over for the albums at thrift stores and now I think the cheapest place is like $1.99. I need to make a list of stuff I really want and get that. I suppose I could add that to my Amazon list so people can quit bugging me about being so hard to shop for. :p

If the kid liked "Kind of Blue," you need to send him "In a Silent Way." It'll blow his mind.

Vinyl IS back. I have over 100 records that were made after 2000.

I think the reason vinyl has made such a comeback is that millennials (and nostalgic older folks) are realizing that listening to music can be a multi-dimensional process. The whole experience of taking in the album artwork, reading the liner notes, and then placing the record onto a mechanical device involves all five senses. Yes, even the smell of a new album coming out of the package. You don't really engage all five senses, at least in any sort of novel way, when clicking through a catalogue of thousands of mutually exclusive songs on some antiseptic digital device.

Now here is the irony.....I don't even have a turntable or stereo anymore! It's been years! Any suggestions for those of you that are audiophiles?

Good stuff Drew. I'm a pretty big fan of be-bop jazz and then the more melodic stuff that Miles did afterwards.....hard for me to get into his more experimental stuff later on.

I was thinking of sending him Donny Hathaway Live, as I'm absolutely certain he has no idea who Donny Hathaway is and it's a different genre from some of the other things he's listened to. And to his credit, he is open to different genres. Hell, I didn't even know who Donny Hathaway was until a few years ago. The emotion and engagement of the audience along with his voice makes this album pure gold.

Great analysis of vinyl bringing in all 5 senses, q. Very true. But the most important sense in music (hearing) is much better served with vinyl. I remember how excited I was when CD's first were in vogue, but it wasn't too long that I realized how less rich the sound was...I'm surprised they lasted so long as the go-to vehicle in the music industry.

Maybe someone more technical than me can help you with your turntable question. All I can say is "just do it". After 20 years without a turntable, I bought a new one last fall, and it's been great fun putting my old albums back in play. Great fun also hunting in the used record shops for hidden gold!

We bought a turntable last year. It's cool. (Although starting off the collection with Taylor Swift was not my preference.) Anyway, they're actually pretty expensive. You can parse through used record stores, but if you want new stuff, you're looking at $20+ a pop. We also stream Spotify through the house.

It's tough to go wrong with any song at any time. (sans Taylor Swift, ironically)

And I was dumbfounded when a friend of mine told me a couple weeks ago that vinyl and reel-to-reel have been making a comeback. Why?!? Well, Q's perspective is certainly helpful.

We will likely see a "vinyl" mode showing up on most music players to make the music sound richer, and add in the scratches and such... :)
