Windhorst: Sam Mitchell won't be returning

I would like to add to the turntable discussion:

When I was 16, I saved all my Bridgeman's money (yes, I am an older gentleman compared to some of you) and went all out. A DJ-quality Yamaha with neutral position, the works. I brought it with me to college because I had some Beatles, Zep, and punk like Pistols and UK Subs that I still wanted to use it for. I took my share of grief. Suffice it to say, when Goldie/FatBoySlim broke a couple of years later, I was seen as an innovator. I mention this because that rarely happens.

There was a store in St. Paul, Cheapo I think. Snelling and Selby. If it's still there, they may be a great place to find Vinyl.

Cheapo is still around, but it's on 26th and Nicollet...pretty good collection. My current favorites though are Down in the Valley and the place on Mainstreet in Hopkins.

I think the reason vinyl has made such a comeback is that millennials (and nostalgic older folks) are realizing that listening to music can be a multi-dimensional process. The whole experience of taking in the album artwork, reading the liner notes, and then placing the record onto a mechanical device involves all five senses. Yes, even the smell of a new album coming out of the package. You don't really engage all five senses, at least in any sort of novel way, when clicking through a catalogue of thousands of mutually exclusive songs on some antiseptic digital device.

Now here is the irony.....I don't even have a turntable or stereo anymore! It's been years! Any suggestions for those of you that are audiophiles?

You nailed the reasons for owning and listening to records. I was always fascinated with my dad's collection so it was easy for me to get on board, and yes it can be an expensive hobby.

Garage D'or moved to somewhere on Lyndale back in the 90s, and I think has since closed down. The old Oar Folkjokeopus is still there at Lyndale and (26th?), but now operates as Treehouse Records under new ownership. I haven't been in there since it changed.

Stunning...so sad. As much of a genius as he was, when I saw him on SNL a few months ago with his all-girl band, I felt he was reaching his peak. Truly a devastating loss for the Mpls. music scene

A couple of years back, Fred Armisen would do a Prince sketch on "SNL". When Prince appeared as a musical guest, they said if he appeared in the sketch that night, they would retire the bit. He refused, saying it was nothing like him (even though Kevin Smith and others said "nailed it"), and refused to appear as a musical guest if they did the sketch. They told him they wouldn't and did it anyway, which might have blown up in there faces if he refused to go on or pulled a stunt like he did at the Super Bowl, but it just goes to show: don't piss off Lorne Michaels. I think it's the only reason Michaels doesn't retire already.

That story, coupled with all the stories about how he doesn't pay his bills, kind of left me with a bad impression of him. But he is an OG, just like Mould and Westerberg, and the guy who wrote "Funkytown", I guess.

On the eve of the Butler meeting with Thibs/Leydon, it's fun to look back on this long thread where we discussed the Mitchell dismissal, who should replace him, and a final diversion into vinyl/turntables and the untimely Prince death.


I'm hoping that tomorrow's meeting ends up surprising us and Butler pledges his allegiance to the Wolves long-term. More likely, he tells T/L that he will be leaving at the end of the season because of his unhappiness with this franchise. This inevitably leads to a terrible season, a mid-season Thibs' firing, and this hapless franchise once again looking for the "right coach". My position remains the same as it was 2 years ago...this failed franchise needs stability more than anything else, and Thibs was exactly the wrong choice to achieve this goal.

LST do you remember the options discussed in this thread for hiring a head coach and front office? I'm curious how they have done assuming they have been employed by a team.
