Maybe Tyus (let's say he hypothetically dropped) would have signed a 3 year deal as a hometown guy but I like the control of a 1st rounder for a little more money as more value since Tyus is a young guy.

Yep.

While it's true that early 2nd round picks once had more value than late 1st round picks... I think that's changing again. The BEST contract in the NBA is obviously the first one. Especially now. And to get Jones (or whomever) for 4 years for less than $8M... easy.

Plus, that contract is small enough that you can throw it in with another deal easily enough if it doesn't pan out.

I kind of started the discussion on Tyus when I questioned his projections... and Q picked up the ball and ran from there. I feel obligated to add some remarks now.

First, I am fine with Tyus as the pick at 24, but want to put it in perspective. Compare it to Dieng at 22... does anyone expect Dieng to be high-impact in this his 3rd year? In reality, we mostly think Dieng was a very solid pick, but more of a trusted reserve than a high-impact player. I feel the same about Tyus... if he's a trusted reserve with some limitations to his game by year 3, I'll say solid pick at 24... but I sure won't expect it in year one and I won't be surprised if he turns out less than that over his career.

In year one, I expect a guy who picks up the offense quickly and can keep the offense flowing. In addition to limitations on defense, I think he'll have a lot of trouble getting shots he wants against NBA defenders. And I think he'll find P&R's much more difficult against NBA size and quickness, both on offense and defense.

Longer term, we can hope for Chalmers (low end) or Lowry (higher end). Both are smaller and took some time to develop, but have shown the ability to have some impact. To get to Chalmers level may just require some time and experience, but to be at a Lowry level, he'll need to get a lot stronger and become a very good 3-point shooter.

The guy is 19, to say he won't be a good defender and he's too small is dumb.

Hey heres the thing. Defense for point guards is not nearly as big of deal as it is for other positions. Every PG can pretty much score on any other PG. Espically for a backup PG, offense is going to be way more important then defense.

Also look at how good of defense Delly played in the finals, and that dude is as unathletic as they come.

People caring about Tyus's defense right now need to cool down

Just a quote I made up...

"I can always live with an idiot calling me dumb, once I know he doesn't know what he's talking about."

Pete, in fairness to alex, I think he's trying to fill the giant void caused by Cam's departure.

I actually found your discussion of Tyus quite measured and fair, and not at all dumb. I didn't hear you say that "he won't be a good defender", but rather that he may struggle with NBA P&Rs and have some limitations on defense. I think that comment is right in line with what most of the experts are saying about Tyus.

I'm a big fan of the deal Flip made to trade the second rounders for Tyus, but I will be surprised if he is an adequate NBA defender in his first year. I'm more than willing to be surprised though.
