We've seen DLO put out defensive effort in the past for a stretch of games. I don't think it's sustainable, but I certainly welcome it now if it helps us win games while at the same time potentially increasing his market value to other teams. He really has been pivotal in these last couple of wins.

Yes, I agree...we've seen more on-ball effort, and more recognition and effort off-ball since the players meeting...really good to see. Dlo is a smart basketball player, has good length for his position and, while not an elite athlete, would not be considered un-athletic. He has all the tools to be at least an adequate NBA defender...he just needs to care more and bring consistent effort. We need that from him.

He is such a mercurial player...some aspect of his game on any given night always seems to leave him with a poor +/-, and this has been an issue his entire career. One night it might be because he is getting scorched on defense, another might be because his shot is off, and still another might be due to turnovers. We need more games where he puts it all together. My honey and I were praising his game on the way to the car, but then were surprised to see that his +8 was 10 points worse than the next worst starter...and 23 points worse than Rudy and SloMo! Overall I thought he had a good game (especially drawing fouls and going 10 for 10 from the line), but he's still struggling with his 3-point shot (now under 35% on the season and 8th on the team  ) and he did have some issues staying with Norman Powell when he was matched up with him. But still, anytime we can get a positive number from Russell, we have a better chance of winning. Keep it up!

Traditional plus-minus is most-helpful and more reliable when used in the context of specific lineup combinations. Using it as an individual grade for how a player performed is where things get troublesome.

With that said, the starting unit of Russell-Edwards-McDaniels-Anderson-Gobert was Minnesota's most-played lineup and most-effective lineup at +14 in 14 minutes last night. They were dominant, as they should be given their opponent.

I agree with this. Coaches cycle players through lineups so quickly that it is impossible to look at that number in isolation. I do think its clear that a superstar player can raise the plus minus of everyone around them. KCP and Aaron Gordon are 2 and 3 in plus minus in the league right now, I dont know that says anything about KCP being a lockdown defender. It only further supports that + - is best viewed as looking how players synergistically fit together to play winning basketball.

To make it plain and simple, anyone on your team that you need to coax effort out of should not be on the team. That is a cancer. Effort should be expected, not coerced.

Just a note on DLO'S +/-...He tends to be the first person pulled with 5-6 minutes in the first quarter, and spends the majority of the remainder of his first minutes with the 2nd team.

His plus minus tends to be more closely tied to the performance of the second unit than the first.

A real dart throw.

Twolves receive: OG Anunoby, Gary Trent JR, Spencer Dinwiddie, Patrick Beverley, Toronto 25 first round, Mavericks 27 first round.

Toronto receives: KAT, Bertans, Nowell

Mavericks receive: D'Lo, Boucher, Wolves 2nd.

Lakers receive: Javale McGee, Bryn Forbes

Mavericks most importantly get off the Bertans contract. Add a better 2nd playmaker in DLo and a longer term big in boucher. Can decide to resign DLo or chase someone else for Luka. Potential for a lot of expiring money.

Lakers get a vet C on a cheap deal to keep Davis at PF and a catch and shoot player. Can let Westbrook expire and open cap.

Raptors pair Pascal with Towns. Keeping Barnes as their SF and FVV at PG. That is a good team.

Minnesota changes it up.

Dinwiddie/ Beverley / JMaC
ANT / Trent JR / Rivers
Jaden / Prince
OG / Anderson / Knight
Gobert / Reid / Garza

Ryan / Moore / Minott

Add 2 future draft picks.

I like that team better moving forward. Pushes the PG decision back a year, garners a better 6th man, brings grit. ANT, Jaden, OG, and Gobert would be a menace defensively. The bench provides a ton of options offensively and defensively.

Let me dream late at night ok.

By the way, I think it is plenty stupid that players can be traded on an expiring with a wink wink I will extend deal but cannot be traded by a team after they extend them for what a player demands monetarily.
