One of the major sports writers (Lowe, Stein, whoever) tweeted that in the last month or so Philly is the number 1 defense in the NBA with him anchoring. They're the 30th offense, but #1 defense because of his impact. Embiid is a superstar on both ends whereas Towns right now is a one-way star offensively working on getting better defensively. Embiid is a monster who just need to get free and clear of the injuries and he'll be number 1 at the end of the day. That being said, Towns will be number 2 so I'll take it.
I agree with your take here. Embiid's potential is definitely higher than towns and that is crazy considering how good towns is and how great he can still be. That just shows that we have 2 bigs playing in the league right now that could be all time greats down the line.
That said, Embiid's injury history and whether his foot holds up is the big question mark. For the good of the game and for embiid, I hope he stays healthy and have a long healthy career. But I will take towns now and for the future. This could be like the kg/duncan debate. While we may acknowledge that one is better than the other, we will still take our guy ang go to battle with him all the way.

Also heard something from Lowe that the 76ers are +10 when Embiid is on the court. Big deal you say? They're about -250 when he's off the court. Obviously, that's the biggest difference in the NBA.

And the biggest reason for that is defense. He's a transformational player defensively and very talented on offense to boot, although still a little raw. Rudy Gobert also single-handedly turned Utah from a mediocre defense into a top 10 defense.
We tend to fall in love with all the sexy things guys like KAT can do on offense, but he has yet to impact the team in the same way either Rudy or Embiid have been able to.

It may be worth noting how much Towns is and isn't playing center compared to those other guys. In addition what type of defensive system is being used? I don't want to downplay those guy's impact and I have been as hard on Towns defense as about anyone here but there could be some factors that make the gap larger.
