We need Brad Stevens 2.0. To take that Celtic team that was clearly trying to tank into the playoffs was quite the accomplishment. Granted they were below .500 and playing in the east, but still.

While on the topic of the Celtics, I wish Flip would have taken the Ainge approach of obtaining assets instead of guys like Young and Payne.

Right, I still think coaches can definitely impact an offense, but just not to the same degree as they can a defense. One is easier to coach up versus the other.

I agree with that. I'm pretty sure that we have not ever seen coach to have as big effect on offensive end with almost same group of players than Kidd and his staff had in defensive side at Milwaukee. Last year they were 29th in Drtg with 108.9 and this year they were 2nd with 99.3. Also Philly had quite a leap from 27th (107.5) to 11th (102.1) but since Noel didn't play last season that improvement was not just coaching related. Also Utah with Snyder made impressive leap from 30th place (Drtg 109.1) to 11th (102.1) but I think that was at least partially because of improvement of Gobert and getting rid of Kanter was addition by subtraction.

God, you're right about Milwaukee's leap under Kidd. I missed that one. But yeah, I attribute Philly just as much to the addition of Noel and Mbah Moute as I do to coach Brown. But Brown definitely deserves some credit, especially given all the losing they went through. It would have been very easy for players to give up.

And it's impossible to overstate the importance of Rudy Gobert to Utah's resurgent defense, so I don't really count that either.

Monster, I just think it's easier to coach up defense because you can improve without necessarily having fundamental skill-set transformations. Simply playing harder and hustling is one example. Offensively, it's hard to coach up things like ball handling, floor vision, and shooting. Offense is more a function of raw skills. Again, I'm not saying a coach can't do anything to impact the offense; it's just a smaller range of possibilities in my mind, constrained (or enabled) by the inherent talent the GM gives the coach.

That's pretty much it, isn't it?

Sure, a coach can improve an offense, but there's only so far a team can go without legit talent/skills on offense. A coach can instill a scheme/principles on defense that can be used by a wider range of players with more immediate results.

The Wolves are in play for Hoiberg, according to this Des Moines sports guy.

AP guy discredited that report. Said Flip will be coaching next season.

If Hoiberg doesn't go to the NBA this year it is because he and Flip have an agreement in place that when he is ready Flip will step down.

Yeah, I saw that too. But then I asked myself who might know more about the Mayor's intentions...Jonny K, or a sports guy from Des Moines. I don't know much about this guy, but I'd tend to give him the nod on anything happening within the state of Iowa... more likely than AP guy to have Iowa sources. I still think Fred is a long shot, because we all know Flip really wants to coach next year. But Glen keeps saying he wants two different guys for PBO and coach, and he could very well exert his will here. If so, it's nice to hear an Iowa guy say we are in the running.

It's as simple as this. Flip's his own boss. Flip can empower himself for whatever job he wants. Flip wants to coach his golden boy Garnett as well as the roster he's assembled. Flip won't turn over the keys to the team without showing what he's built can be good. He wants the credit; he doesn't want the new coach to get the credit. Bingo.

We won't have a new coach until we're good for a whole year. My opinion after all that's happened.
