While I don't believe that he wanted Culver (based on rumors that we were trying to trade back after Garland was off teh board), I have no problem with the pick. While he may be as quck or athletic as some, they say he does everything well and has a feel for the game with good footwork, and great hesitation moves. Hesitation moves are what made Brandon Roy great. That's how you get to the line (Harden)
What is silly is giving up a valuable asset to get someone without knowing for sure that you'll get him. The Suns must have concluded that the Cavs would take Garland and keep him, which as you suggested helps explain why the Suns did the deal to move down to #11. That the Suns were smart enough to know they wouldn't get Garland at #6 makes Rosas look especially silly trading up to get him. Of course, maybe the Suns had no interest in Garland. But that still doesn't change the fact that the Rosas traded up for a guy without knowing he could get him. Again, I get it if Rosas was convinced that Culver was a much better prospect than anyone he could have taken at #11. We'll see.
Lip can I ask you what value you think Saric has around the league. He doesn't have a big contract so its hard to acquire a better/bigger contract because you need to add multiple pieces to the trade. Saric is about to get paid in RFA for being a fringe NBA starter, and in my opinion his value is lower to other teams knowing they will have to pay him next year.
Now if Rosas really believed that after Culver there is a drop off and that there was a chance to get his best player available Garlund I don't blame Rosas for taking the risk.
Now if he legit had Culver a tier below Garlund and that he had Culver in a tier with guys who might be available at 11 then we have a problem but I legit don't believe that. The draft express guys had Culver there 3rd best prospect ahead of Barrett and Kevin O'Conner had him also 3rd ahead of Morant (Now these draft guys can totally be wrong but Its not like other guys didn't have Culver high)
As I said in my response to SJM, it's hard to now what Saric's value was around the League on draft night, but he obviously had enough value to move the Wolves up 5 spots in the draft. He's young, a true stretch 4 with a career 3-point percentage of around 37% and has a very team-friendly salary. He's a good rebounder and plays hard. By all accounts he's a terrific teammate and he has playoff experience. I'd say he had pretty good trade value.

The Suns were smart enough to trade down and draft a guy a lot of people thought would go 10-20 picks later. Maybe the Suns knew something the media folks didn't. I know Lip you liked Cam Johnson a lot but a few draft folks actually said (this was before the draft) they think he will be lucky to be an average defender. I thought that was a bit eye opening.
i liked Cam Johnson, but I thought the Suns made a big mistake taking him at #11. And that's before I found out post-draft that Johnson has some serious medical issues that caused some teams to "red flag him" as a prospect they wouldn't draft under any circumstances. So the Suns front office continues to remain one of the League's worst in my view.
I have Tom Petty's voice in my head now and I can't wait to see Culver in action. I'm headed to Vegas for the first 4 days of Summer League. Culver won't be able to play Friday July 5, but I'm hoping he'll be in action the following days, which will give me 2 games to watch him live on July 7 and 8.
Have fun in Vegas Lip, it is so dumb that Culver can't play the 1st game, Rosas is still not allowed to talk to him. Culver is not allowed to practice with the Summer League team until the 6th and Culver can't work out with Saunders. It is so dumb. This year more dumb than years past
Wow Lip I had heard that it was heard the last few hours before the draft Cam was possibly dropping in the 2nd round but I did not hear why. But hey Jim Bower the guy that recruited him in college finally got his guy!!! Lol
I got to get to Vegas one of these years. Hmm I just realized this would have been a great year to do it if I had known my work schedule more in advance. I was hoping the last southwest air sale a few weeks ago would have had flights to Vegas cheap but they didn't. Have fun I always look forward to your report.
It sucks that Culver will be held back and all this stuff...heck we can't even be working with him for a couple weeks which probably isn't helpful when it comes to development etc. Hopefully he is doing good work with the folks he hired to help him get ready for the draft etc. I'm sure he is but yeah it's kinda lame.
Tom Petty IMO is a good voice to have in your head. :) I need to go back and finishing listening to all his albums. If you like that kind of stuff and you have never listened to the Traveling Wilbury's a super group he was in it's really good stuff IMO.

Thanks for the ideas! I mentioned the museums but I'll bring up the shows also. The funny thing about all this is that for the first time in YEARS my wife is now low on vacation time so I don't know if she has the time to take off. I could make it work one way or another. I could also go by myself. If the cheap flights are still there in a couple days...

This is a nice video of highlights of Culver. There are dunks in here.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Xc3VgoiBI
Here is a decent scouting video of him against Kansas a fan did after his freshman year.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uTu3NMYOiwg
Highlight video of him in HS. On a recent podcast Wolfson had a Baylor Assistant and he said they wanted Culver but he really wanted to play PG and they already had some commitments at that spot. Culver was like #324 in his class or something like that. 3 star guy that didn't exactly have an awesome list of schools offering him a spot.

Not surprised to learn he was a soccer player growing up. I think a lot of these elite prospects benefit from playing other sports and soccer especially seems like a nice compliment to basketball. Lots of the same concepts in terms of spacing, ball movement, cutting (or making "runs"), footwork, etc. Doesn't help with shooting though!

Here is a decent scouting video of him against Kansas a fan did after his freshman year.

Yeah the one thing that seems pretty consistent about Culver is that he knows how to play and has good instincts. Compare that to Nassir Little (was just a freshman) and a number of folks were concerned about his feel for the game which seems weird when he was such a highly ranked guy coming into college. I'm still not like sold on Culver being awesome but I can buy some upside plus it seems his floor is pretty good. I can see him being a tier above some other guys. How much higher? Idk but let's be honest if Culver turns into JUST a legit starting wing this could be a pick that helps the franchise quite a bit.
The one thing that has swayed me toward Culver being a higher level prospect than I thought before was more knowledge of his ballhandling/footwork/craftiness and his playmaking/passing. Basically he is more like a guard offensively (instead of a SF) than I realized. Maybe it doesn't translate but I am now certainly more interested to see.
It's pretty impressive how Texas Texh lost their 2 best players last year in Z Smith and Keneen Evans along with 4 other seniors that played legit minutes and reloaded to improve their record and make a National Championship run. Chris Beards seems like he might be a good coach. This is the 2nd year in a row he has had a 3 star Texas kid picked in the 1st round of the NBA draft. Not too shabby.

I am curious how often college players get their shot completely reworked - I know the NBA has done it as well - does anyone have examples of other players who get their shot reworked that leads to worse shooting and then reworked again to make it better?
