Jarrett Culver

Post by kekgeek »

Great nugget for @YahooSports NBA Draft show: Jarrett Culver demanded that his agents find a gym for him to workout after the draft. (Which will be like midnight). His reps told me they have one reserved. @TexasTechMBB coach Chris Beard: "The game consumes him."

I hate to say this because I know how sensitive Wolves fans are about him, but Culver does have some Jimmy Butler to his game, personality, and even his background.

This is an interesting breakdown from a former NBA guy about how he feels like Culver might be the best player in this draft. The Video is worth your time IMO.

I'd love it if he ended up as a Jimmy Butler. But I don't quite see it. Butler was 222 lbs coming out of college while Culver is 195. The size/strength difference is huge. Butler was also a better shooter than Culver. As a sophomore, Butler shot 53% from the field, compared to Culver's 47% and 78% from the line compared to 70%. Butler didn't take many threes, so it's hard to compare the two on that metric. But I do see the similarly in style and competitiveness.

First video I watched tonight, first thing I noticed was his footwork. Very advanced as this video points out. Really like how he's used both hands off the dribble and to finish. That move against Hunter in the last minute of the championship game was legit. His mechanics on his jumps looks pretty good also.

I've watched just a few videos, there is a strong resemblance to Butler with how he plays.

You guys are all talking yourself into something that isn't real. This was a 3 player draft. After that there will surely be some guys that become good pros, but it's a true crapshoot. Further, I can pretty much guarantee you there will be players drafted after #6 that will be better than the #6. Why do you do this to yourselves? Last year Okogie was a great pick. Before that you were all pining for Dunn. Here's the truth, moving out of the middle of the NBA is very hard. Thibs put us there with his ill-advised trade for Butler. Players like Culver and Okogie are not going to get us out of too good and not good enough. We have to swing for the fences and tonight we opted for another try at a double.

A couple things.

1. I didn't really dig into guys like Culver because I didn't really think we would be in a position to draft him or Hunter so...eh. That doesn't mean they aren't any good.

2. I'm agreeing with the Butler comps I thought that before they said that on the broadcast.

3. I know he didn't perform well shooting the ball his last 2 games but are we going to not give him credit for being on a team that was very good both years? they lost to Villanova his freshman year...There is no shame in that. They were also one of the best ranked defensive teams both years...Wolves do need defense.

I watched the video. I'm not converted yet, but I liked a lot of what I saw. He does look a bit like Butler in the way he plays. That's a good thing by the way. :) I don't think he's as athletic as Jimmy and he's 25 lbs less than Jimmy was coming out of college. I don't think there were any dunks by Culver in that video, which underscores his lack of explosiveness. With an 8'4.5 overhead reach, his apparent lack of hops is a bit of a concern to me. Otherwise, I do love his footwork and his body control. And he appears to have a really high basketball IQ. Put all that together with what is reported to be a relentless work ethic and maybe he'll end up an allstar caliber player for the Wolves. At this point, I'll just say Culver looks solid. But he doesn't look any better to me than Nickeil Alexander-Walker and NAW was a much better 3-point and free throw shooter than Culver as a sophomore. Moreover, NAW is also slightly longer than Culver. My eye test tells me that NAW is also a better ballhandler. I'd rather have NAW along with Saric than just having Culver. But I'm warming up to Culver a bit. :)

I'd be interested in knowing whether there are any really good 3-point shooter in the NBA (37% or better) who hit only around 30% of their college threes. I think Kawhi falls into that category. There might be some others, but I haven't researched it.

Don't do it Lip. You were right on this and now you're beginning to fall into the old trap. He is not going to be an all star caliber player for the Wolves. Probably not even close.
