DeMarcus Cousins wants LeBron to sign with the Wolves

Actually a cool interview with DMC on the Wiz Sac Summer League game.

Thinks LeBron should join Antman and LeMelo as the funnest team in the league

While the Timberwolves “ambassador” Kevin Garnett is publicly declaring Cleveland and New York as the best destinations for LeBron, DeMarcus Cousins is recommending Minnesota. Perhaps it’s time to hire a new ambassador. :).

David Aldridge, one of the best NBA reporters, thinks LeBron should go to Minnesota.

That’s a fun article and it raises some good points. Every team LeBron has chosen has been a place where he was highly coveted and adored. Think back to the fanfare and reception he received in Miami when he left Cleveland for the Heat. Up to that point, the Heat had been playing in an almost half-empty arena and were not a particularly hot attraction in Miami. That dynamic transformed instantly with the news that LeBron was “taking [his] talents to South Beach.” When he went back to Cleveland, it was like the return of the Messiah. The population of Cleveland loved him even more than before knowing that this time, unlike the first time, he chose Cleveland - he chose them. He even ignited the enthusiasm of Laker fans who had been struggling without a star player since the end of the Kobe Bryant era. The Lakers have always had a star and LeBron was the star they’d been waiting for.

Flash forward to the current choice facing LeBron. When I think about the common thread in all of LeBron’s prior choices, I become more convinced that he’ll end up in Minnesota. No other team covets him as much as the Wolves and no other city or fan base will provide him with as much adoration as he’d get here if he signs with the Wolves. Cleveland and Miami have had LeBron before. They had him when he was in his prime and won championships with him. Against that backdrop, returning to those cities just seems anticlimactic and couldn’t possibly generate the same level of enthusiasm and adoration he’d get coming to Minnesota. And even though the Sixers haven’t won in a long time, Philly doesn’t strike me as a community that would celebrate LeBron to the extent he’d be celebrated in Minny. Coming here, LeBron wouldn’t just raise the level of the team’s play, he’d put the entire city on the map in a way it’s never been before - the King choosing to build his last castle in a place perceived by so many to be almost uninhabitable 9 months of the year. Signing with the Wolves just seems to align with LeBron’s pattern and would give him what he appears to want more than anything - a kingdom that loves him. In that sense, he’s no different from most kings.

If LeBron doesn't go back to Cleveland or join a team of washed up vets he needs to just retire.

Him joining the Wolves makes no sense to me.

I tend to ride the fence or avoid overly definitive statements...

... but I am 100% sure LeBron James is not coming to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Minnesota is apparently one of five potential landing spots for LeBron. Without any more reliable information, that means there’s an 80% chance LeBron won’t sign with the Wolves. So you’re not that far off at 100%. :).

After listening to the recent Dane Moore podcast, listened to him talk about the Finch interview and how they want to be versatile and have someone who can guard a rugged four and a shooting four etc., it seems like this boards biggest problem with lack of specific power forward is who will guard the big bruisers of the league…. How long do you think LeBron listens to a pitch that involves Tim Connolly pleading with him to come get beat up by Zion Williamson . I don’t see it being a very enticing offer to a 40-year-old man coming to enjoy the twilight of his career record a documentary while we’re asking him to come in and go up against the physical forwards in the league and get his butt kicked nightly.

My final take on LeBron before his “Decision.” I see the five teams on LeBron’s finalist list falling into one of two distinct categories: (1) the fun and comfort category; or (2) the LeBron legacy category. I think LeBron’s ultimate decision will be driven by which of those two things he prioritizes. I think winning is subsumed under both. It’s certainly more fun to win, although I suspect winning is probably a more significant part of the legacy category. But in neither case is winning a title paramount. Winning is only one element of his final act to cement his legacy.

In truth, all five teams will probably win more games than they lose next season, and except for Golden State, they all are all potential title contenders. There are so many variables that even a great basketball mind like LeBron’s can’t have a high degree of confidence in the title chances of one versus another among the 4 with title potential. So it really boils down to what LeBron wants the most out of this last big Decision that will culminate in him joining one last team for one last season (or maybe two). Here’s how I see the five teams lining up under these two categories

FUN AND COMFORT TEAMS

1. Golden State - Pure fun and comfort playing with his friends and contemporaries, Steph and Draymond, and staying in California where he can golf year round and remain relatively close to his wife who plans to remain in LA. This is where LeBron will go if it’s all about fun and comfort without any interest in meaningfully enhancing his legacy.

2. Miami - While the Heat might be a title contender in the East, they seem a distant fourth to the Knicks, Sixers and Cavs. Giannis is great but he’s not the same player at age 32 he was at age 28. Further, they are severely lacking in depth and floor spacers. It’s just not an optimal blend of talent even if Giannis is at the top of his game and shows a level of durability he hasn’t shown recently. And even if Miami were a leading title contender, returning to a city where he’s already won a title for a franchise that is neither special nor starved for a championship would add nothing to LeBron’s legacy. In fact, rejecting his home town team yet again to “take his talents to South Beach” would likely detract from his legacy. Therefore, choosing the Heat would be almost entirely a fun and comfort choice. LeBron apparently loves the whole Miami vibe. And of course, he loves the weather and the winter outdoor golf opportunity he’s have there - something he would no have in Cleveland, Philadelphia or Minnesota.

LEGACY TEAMS

1. Cleveland — This is the safest and easiest choice for LeBron’s legacy. Going back to his home-town team where he started his NBA career in an effort to bring them one more championship would further enhance his legacy in a sentimental sense and it has no downside because he gets the legacy value even if the team flops. But LeBron also knows, the Cavs are a talented team that certainly has a better chance than Miami of coming out of the East.

2. Sixers - I see the Sixers as LeBron’s best shot among the four contenders at getting to the NBA finals — assuming Embiid’s health holds up. Helping one of the oldest NBA franchises with a storied past that includes Dr. J win their first championship in 40 some years would certainly add to LeBron’s legacy.

3. Wolves — The Wolves should be a major contender in the West. Helping our franchise in the forgotten frozen tundra that most people avoid win its first championship would be a big notch in LeBron’s legacy belt.

So which team will it be? I’ll start by saying there is only one really dumb choice for LeBron and that would be Miami. It’s the one choice that could hurt his legacy regardless of how well the team does.

So if it’s mainly about fun and comfort, I think LeBron will choose Golden State unless LeBron is severely lacking in self-awareness, which wouldn’t totally surprise me.

If it’s mainly about his legacy, then I think he’ll choose Cleveland. If LeBron wants to be bold and go really big on legacy, then it will be the Wolves or Sixers. How will decide between the two? I think he’s too smart to bank on predicting the title chances of one or the other. There are too many variables, and both Embiid and LaMello are big durability variables. So I think it comes down to this if he wants to go big with either the Sixers or Wolves. If he wants to optimize his fun on the court and in the locker room he’ll choose the Wolves. I don’t think Jaylen Brown and Embiid are fun to be around and neither seems fun to play with as they are both black holes with the ball in their hands. In contrast, the Wolves with LaMello and Ant will play a fun brand of basketball. Ant is the kind of personality who’s fun to be around. All the Wolves core players are young and humble enough to give LeBron a level of deference he can’t necessarily expect from Embiid or the smartest guy in the room, Jaylen Brown.

But if LeBron’s ego can’t accept playing for the Wolves or leads him to choose a team with a legacy that includes iconic NBA greats like Dr. J and Moses Malone, then he’ll choose the Sixers.

Ultimately, I think LeBron will choose Cleveland because I think he cares more about his legacy than fun and comfort for his last season and Cleveland is the easy, no risk choice to enhance his legacy. I don’t think he’ll take the risk of going big on legacy with either the Sixers or Wolves. If he’s a true dunderhead, which he might be, he’ll choose Miami.

This morning I asked Google AI for the latest news on LeBron. Here’s what I got:

LeBron Watch: As James' decision stretches into its third week, front offices are still actively recruiting him. While Cleveland and Golden State appear to be the leading suitors, teams like the Philadelphia 76ers (bolstered by their connection to Tyrese Maxey) are also in the mix.

The Wolves can’t even get any respect from artificial intelligence! lol.
