Fair analogy, although I'd argue Cousins' success (like all NFL QBs) is far more consequential to overall team success than DLO's success is for the Wolves THIS season. I would hope with the accumulation of talent, we can withstand more of those inconsistent DLO performances. Also, he shouldn't have to take as many shots this year or even play quite as many minutes.
I agree that qbs play a bigger role. But the Wolves recent success has been directly tied to DLO playing well.

Don't disagree. Let's hope our reliance on whether he shoots well or not becomes a little less pronounced this year.

I'll also add that Cousins is also a higher ranked player at his position than Russell. Cousins also isn't relied on to play defense which quite frankly has been the biggest problem with the Vikings for over 2 seasons now. Another parallel that can be drawn is I think both guys could benefit quite a bit from the correct coaches. It's still early bit so far as a Cousins fan he hasn't made me think he has ascended any higher and O'Connell seems like a good dude with awesome energy but I haven't been wowed yet. Again it's still early. That offensive line against the Saints looked pretty bad at times though.

My impression of the Vikings' offense during the Cousins era is that it always feels like they underachieve. So while I know that the defense has been a big issue in terms of their W/L record over the past few seasons, it just seems like the whole has been less than the sum of the parts on offense.

I absolutely agree. There are a lot of factors/parts to that underachievement. Some of the biggest likely factors are: Coaching, coaching turnover, oline, Cousins.
One thing that Cousins has that Russell doesn't is durability. That's one reason I think based on the market that Cousins has gotten paid something much closer to market value as a Viking than Russell has during his time with the Wolves. I will not argue that paying Cousins has been worth it in terms of team success because no question it hasn't. Again parts of that are factors beyond Cousins control. It will be interesting to see how things shake out for the Vikings the next handful of games. The Vikings are never boring. Lol they need to start winning now before they have to max out Ryan Wright and their window closes.
The Vikings are very soft on defense and mistake prone on offense. Stupid penalties and blown assignments seem to plague the team every week. They definitely need a thumper on defense, someone who can bring some physicality to that group. With Denver's starting running back going down last week, I suggest we trade Alexander Mattison to them for one of their front 7 defenders. Mattison is leaving after this season anyway, and he would flourish in the mile high city.
