Wolves-Lakers-Jazz - The DLO Deal
Wolves-Lakers-Jazz - The DLO Deal
Here's a take from USA Today:
"The Lakers and Jazz both won their three-team trade that also featured the Timberwolves on Wednesday. Minnesota is the only one that looks like a loser."
I don't have strong feelings about this deal either way. I think the Lakers hit the most out if the deal. The Jazz got yet another 1st-round pick. The Wolves replenish their second-round cupboard. If Conley stays healthy - a big if - the impact on this season will probably be neutral. If he can't stay in the court, it's probably a step back unless the Edwards/Nowell backcourt consistently resembles what we saw last night.
TC continues his effort with this deal to make the Gobert deal work. Meanwhile, the team continues to win more when Gobert doesn't play.

Ouch. Yeah, when you look at that deal it appears the Lakers were the ones that really got a shot in the arm when it comes to this season.
Some of DLO's biggest detractors would say this is addition by subtraction. That his mercurial disposition and poor defense more than offset his hot shooting and play making. And that putting a steady hand at the wheel like Conley will do wonders for overall team chemistry and performance.
I agree with you Lip that it seems mostly like a neutral move for the Wolves which is why I'm not too up or down about it either. I'm open minded though and interested to see how things play out.

I'm feeling the same way, Q. And I don't want to gloss over the value getting three second rounder starting in 2024. With our draft cupboard so sparse, those three picks matter. Are those picks coming from Utah or LA?

2024 is the lesser of Washington what Utah and then 25 and 26 are both Utah

Thanks, Kek. Those picks will all probably be in the low to mid-40s. We now have at least one draft pick in 6 of the next 7 years and two picks in both 2024 and 2026. I think 2027 is the only year we don't have any picks.

There are going to be all kinds of opinions - all over the board. Let's see what other moves have today and then see what happens for the last 20+ games. I don't think anyone can confidently proclaim winners/losers at this point. I feel like the draft picks will allow TC to make another move today so we will want to judge all the moves as part of a bigger picture.

Well a lot of people don't think it makes sense for the Wolves because any strategy that involves the team trying to win games never makes sense to the general public.
the only moves the national media wants to see from the Wolves are Towns and Ant for a song.
But it reverts back to faulty logic that everyone has, which is "this is Ant's team now," which is code for "make Ant feel alone."

The Lakers now might make the playoffs where it was looking like they would miss, they aren't good enough to win a series though. Utah was looking like they might sneak into the playoffs, and now I doubt that happens. Lebron is going to hate Dlo, the Lakers are going to decline Beasley's team option next year and both DLo and Beasley will sign elsewhere in the summer. The Lakers will have a lot of cap space to go out and sign a free agent. I suppose the only positive for the Lakers who gave up a first round pick, is that they can sign and trade Russell in the summer if Russell agrees to it. Now yes Conley does need to stay healthy, but I have a feeling you are going to see a better team with the ball moving around a lot more. Sometimes just subtracting a player like Atlanta and Detroit both did with Josh Smith years ago who on paper had great stats but on the court was killing the teams is a plus.

I love the national hate on the Wolves. It's probably deserved for the last two decades of perpetual ineptitude though.
Is there a little bit of load management going on with Rudy? He seems to be sitting quite a bit. Or is it simply nagging injuries?

Four of the Timberwolves' biggest contributors last season are currently on the Lakers -- Patrick Beverley, D'Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley. I don't care what your thoughts are on the current Minnesota roster, that stings a bit.
As an aside, Los Angeles sits 3.5 games behind Minnesota in the standings. Will they catch up and surpass us as a direct result of this trade? Who knows, but I wouldn't be shocked, especially given the unknown timeline for Karl-Anthony Towns' recovery.
Losers indeed.
