Advanced Stat Tracker 2022-23
Re: Advanced Stat Tracker 2022-23
To give a sense of the scale for Box Score Plus-Minus:
+10.0 is an all-time season (think peak Jordan or LeBron)
+8.0 is an MVP season (think peak Dirk or peak Shaq)
+6.0 is an all-NBA season
+4.0 is in all-star consideration
+2.0 is a good starter
+0.0 is a decent starter or solid 6th man
-2.0 is a bench player (this is also defined as "replacement level")
Below -2.0 are many end-of-bench players

Other notes:
- Wins Share per 48 sort of combines individual box score stats with team performance, especially on the defensive side where players are assigned proportionate values for good team defense (meaning it doesn't quite isolate for each individual's contribution. Everyone is rewarded when they are on the floor of a good defensive unit).
- The Offensive, Defensive, and Net Ratings is from NBA.com. It is NOT the same as the basketball reference offensive and defensive rating. The NBA.com looks at how the team scores or prevents scores per 100 possessions while the player is on the floor.
- 10 games is still a pretty small sample size, but it does provide some early insights.

Re: Advanced Stat Tracker 2022-23
A few early observations based on this:
- Not that it hasn't been obvious to anyone watching, but man, our starters really struggle offensively with Rudy on the floor. Remember, Utah had the #1 offense in the league last year. Rudy is perfectly capable of being part of a highly efficient offense. They have GOT to figure this out and part of it is on Finch too.
- Our starting guards, especially DLO, have been very underwhelming. We need more from both of them.
- The bench has been absolutely terrific. They are just crushing other benches.
- Jordan McLaughlin with a Net Rating of +20, this despite a shitty shooting start and minimal scoring, which is what weighs down his box score plus-minus rating. The one guy he isn't playing well with when paired on the floor together? DLO.
- Jaden is a bit of a hard one to evaluate. His poor defensive rebounding hurts him as an overall defender (despite his good one on one defense) and his outside shooting is inconsistent. But in other areas, like 2-point scoring efficiency and steals/blocks he's doing pretty well.

Re: Advanced Stat Tracker 2022-23
Yeah, Jaden is the most difficult one for me to evaluate statistically also. Lip is calling for Prince to replace him in the starting lineup, and I understand his position even though I would still prefer Jaden starting. My impression is that Jaden is almost always on the court when the other team's best scorer is out there, and that has to have a negative impact on his stats. That said, his rebounding is still an issue.
The pace stats on nba.com are also interesting and support what seems clear...everything changes when the bench comes in:
Nowell: 108.41
JMac: 108.02
Prince: 107.37
Naz: 107.17
Jaden: 104.24
Ant: 102.86
KAT: 102.31
Rudy: 102.29
DLo: 101.69
SLOMO: 99.46!
Finchie keeps saying he wants to play with pace, so at some point we have to see more minutes from the guys who are actually doing it. And as for SloMo...he is what he is! He looked really good last night, though, didn't he?

My call for Prince to start over McDaniels is more a function of how well Price is playing than anything negative about McDaniels. My thinking also reflects the need to do something to shake up the starting lineup in light of how horribly it's been performing.
The Jazz had a terrific offense with Gobert, but they didn't have another big like KAT. They also surrounded Rudy with good three-point shooters and had a dynamic starting guard who was 24 years old and playing at an all-star level. We have another big in KAT, and no elite three-point shooters in our starting lineup other than KAT. Moreover, our "dynamic" guard just turned 21 and clearly isn't ready to play at an all-star level. The situation is Minnesota presents quite a challenge for Finchie, but he was apparently in favor of the Gobert deal so we'll see if he can make it work.
Re: Advanced Stat Tracker 2022-23
One thing I find fascinating is that Nowell has the second-best defensive rating on the team thus far. Go figure. Those sorts of advanced stats don't always match observations. However, in the case of McLaughlin the stats clearly match my observations. He's been our best PG and I think he should be starting for us, although that would sort of force the issue regarding DLO.
DLO for Kyrie? DLO for Simmons? I wouldn't want Kyrie anywhere near this team? But I'd consider dealing DLO for Simmons. I think he'd help the team's offensive flow and he'd also improve our rebounding, which thus far has been bad in spite of Gobert's lofty rebounding numbers.

Some of thing Nowell defensive rating thing is skewed by playing with Gobert. 4.6 pts better on defense for Nowell with Gobert compared to without gobert. That 2 man combo is in the 99th percentile when it comes to defense.

Good info, Kek. But Nowell's defensive stat still looks pretty good even when he's on the floor without Rudy.
