Austin Rivers signs with the wolves

Post by kekgeek »

Free agent guard Austin Rivers has agreed on a one-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, his agents Dave Spahn and Aaron Mintz of CAA Sports tell ESPN. Rivers played 67 games for Denver a year ago, where new president Tim Connelly signed him in consecutive seasons.

Figured they would add a guard. I question the decision to sign Austin Rivers, as opposed to other available guards, because of what he brings and what the team needs being different, but he's a solid pro. Can't hate it.

I'm enjoying how they are filling out the roster, solid defender, decent shot creator what they needed more of, can play some pg. Used to playing with a great big.

He is going to be projected as their 11th or 12th man, I like it

Yup! All he needed to do was watch Moore and Minot in summer league, and figures he only needs to beat out McLaughlin and Nowell for a spot in the rotation! ;-)

Officially signs for the minimum. Are the wolves a title destination now?

I would have preferred Schroder - better playmaker, gets to the line more and hits far greater percentage of free throws when he gets there, better FG percentage, and a year younger. But who knows - maybe they tried and he didn't want to come here. Otherwise, I would have preferred taking a shot with McClung as a young talent who could develop into a starter. If this player is going to be an 11th or 12th man, I'd rather have someone with growth potential like McClung over Rivers.

Nevertheless, I can't say this is a bad signing. I think it's a bland move like drafting Moore and Kessler. I don't see much imagination or innovation in the moves Connelly makes. The Gobert deal was huge, but it wasn't exactly creative or savvy. It was just giving up a lot of assets to get one really good player. It was a rational move and not necessarily a bad one either. But with the possible exception of drafting Minott, Connelly hasn't made any moves that I find innovative, creative or savvy.

Another solid signing to fill out the roster. Austin brings experience, grit and toughness. Real team player too.

Austin Rivers was the player picked with the Marko Jaric pick. We've come full circle. Let's be sure to get Marko an honorary ring when the Wolves win it.

Edit: As an aside, remember when that trade happened and when the pick came due. It was almost as catastrophic then as the pick haul for Gobert is now. How times as have changed.

You're right about the grit and toughness.
