Who Got the Best of the Boston-OKC Trade?

Post by Lipoli390 »

Somewhat unexpectedly, the Celtics traded Kemba Walker and their #16 pick in this year's draft for Moses Brown and Al Horford. Who do you think got the better of the deal?

I voted draw.

At first blush, the deal seems like a bad one for the Lakers. But I think the evaluation changes when you consider Kemba's physical health. I think the Celtics know that Kemba is breaking down physically and is not going to come close to living up to the amount he's being paid. This trade will give the Celtics some cap relief while also adding both a solid veteran big and a very promising young big in Moses Brown. Note that Brown averaged almost 9 rebounds in only slightly more than 20 minutes per game last season as a 20-year old. He's huge and talented. He's probably better than anyone the Celtics would draft at #16. Horford can help the Celtics next season or provide further salary savings via trade or buy-out.

The deal makes sense for OKC. They are in full rebuild mode and have only one sure building block, SGA. This trade will give them yet another 1st round pick to use in their effort to accumulate as much young talent as possible. Meanwhile, Kemba can probably be dealt to a contender like the Lakers for another young player or draft asset and some cap relief.

Tend to think both teams won here because ai think both of them got assets that could pay off down the road.

Moses Brown is 21 turns 22 so he is old. Lol jk. What's curious about adding him is they already have Robert Williams plus Horford. Obviously Horford isn't in the long term plans and these guys can play some PF also but it's a bit of a longjam. Edit: and Tristin Thompson (who could also be traded) On the other hand one of those guys could get traded...possibly even this summer. Maybe even for some decent value.

OKC if Kemba is healthy it's not like he complete sucked last year when he played. He is just overpaid by a lot. They will probably explore moving him this summer and maybe even play him next season if they don't find a trade partner but if he is healthy they could trade him in season. If he is healthy and a trade can't work he might do a buyout that saves OKC a nice chunk of money. Would I rather have Moses Brown or a draft pick? Idk Moses Browns was locked in for dirt cheap for 3 more years. Bigs are devalued so maybe they want to take a shot at a more perimeter oriented player or maybe move around in the draft? Moses Brown isn't a certainty to be good although he was really productive this year. Did they trade away a future starter or did they give up the next Boban...or someone that's a bench player at best? Obviously the draft pick is a gamble too and will cost a little more but anywho.

Does this deal have any possible implications for the Wolves? What is Tristin Thompson's value around the league? Will they have to pay to move him? Would a Culver for THompson to save the Celtics some money and valence each team's roster work? What about a Juancho for TT? I would think THompson wouldn't be that hard to move and so the Celtics would get better offers but just having one team with a glut of players to move means more moves which could open up more opportunities. Heck with no tue PG with Boston would they do a deal for Rubio and expirings for Horford? Might the wolves even get a minor asset back in a deal like that? Like ai said the more movement around the league the more opens might be available for deals. What's the next move?
