Grade the Draft

Post by kekgeek »

I give it a solid B+. Wolves traded pick 19, 40, 48 and 3 future 2nds for Pick 22,26, 45, and 3 futures 2nds. So the Wolves lost 0 future 2nd round picks and moved up in the draft multiple times.

Kessler: Solid B, I am never a big fan of drafting centers in the draft just because their upside is usually not as high. But we bitch and bitch and bitch about not having a big shot blocking rebounding center and he fits all that. Kat no longer needs to fight the Jokic/Embiid/Valuncunis/Adams of the world for 30 minutes a night. He is a good rim roller and hopefully the shot comes around. Can now run drop coverage so the wolves can be more dynamic on defense. I just like the pick overall

Moore: I give it an A, a 3 and D wing that can dribble and attack close outs and make the rotation passes. Love the pick, he just doesn't have high upside. He is a young Junior though he is not 21 yet. I just have a hard time seeing him not being a NBA rotation piece.

Minott: B+, it is swing for the fences. Going to be a 2-way guy but he is so athletic. I love the flyer in 2nd round. He might bust but in terms of potential might be the highest ceiling of any 2nd round pick. If the wolves are going to take 2 safer 1st round picks I love that they swung for the fences in the 2nd round

Spagnolo: B, don't know anything about him. So ya. Young stash guy who gets to develop on the dime of the best Euro team in the world and he can shoot. Who knows but he has the best skill in the nba in his shooting.

Overall: Wolves got rotation pieces in the 1st round and took a swing for the fences in the 2nd. Also I thought they moved around in the draft like an elite organization. They acquired a 1st round pick, gave up no future picks, it was a master class in pick value.

I'll give them B for the picks and I give them an A for moving up and getting something out of all their 4 picks and getting draft picks back.

Kessler: I give the Wolves a C for this pick. A traditional center with small/bad hands strikes me as a no better than an average pick given the other alternatives on the board like Ty Ty Washington, Kennedy Chandler, Christian Koloko and Jovic. I actually would have preferred Beauchamp or David Roddy over Kessler with this pick. Kessler could pleasantly surprise me, but I consider him a disappointing pick at 22.

Moore: I give the Wolves a B+ for this pick. I like Moore. He shot really well his Junior year after shooting horribly in both of his prior two seasons. He looks like a good passer with a high basketball IQ. He has a mediocre standing reach for a SG, but a good wingspan. He's a good but not great athlete. Definitely an above average pick given the alternatives available at 26.

Josh Minott: I give the Wolves a C for this pick. I actually like Minott's athleticism, energy and defensive potential. But he has one of the most broken shots I've ever seen in a draft prospect. In spite of the shot, I would have given the Wolves a higher grade for this pick if not for the fact that his selection was part of a deal that gave up a #40 pick they Wolves could have used to draft EJ Liddell or Ryan Rollins. And even at #45, I think Kendall Brown would have been a better pick.

Matteo Spagnolo: I'll give the Wolves a B+ for this pick. I don't know much about Spagnolo, but I'm impressed by what I've read. He strikes me as a really nice pick-and-stash selection.

Overall: I give the Wolves a B-. I have a hard time believing the Wolves couldn't have traded up at a reasonable price to get Dalen Terry or Tari Eason, who were drafted #18 and 17 respectively. Having barely missed on Dalen Terry and Tari Eason, I liked the decision to trade down for two picks. I just don't think the Wolves optimized the use of those two picks. Moore was a good choice, but I believe that passing on the chance to draft Ty Ty will turn out to have been a big mistake. Once Branham slid to #19, I would have liked the Wolves to stay at 19 and take him. If Moore can pick up where he left off as a Junior at Duke and doesn't backslide towards the player he was his first two years at Duke, then he could be a difference-maker in our rotation, perhaps even in his rookie year. I'm still wondering whether there is a deal in the works for a veteran that involves some of the Wolves picks.

Don't know who any of these guys are.

I'm still in a stupor from twins not sweeping this week.

But I give A+ for the Blocker Kessler Ranger nickname I'm seeing on the Auburn Reddit

...because if I had Theilbar and Duffy I would pull my starter of 65 pitches, too.

Emilio Pagán has allowed 14 homers in his last 33 innings dating back to last season.

His career rate of 1.8 homers allowed per nine innings is the highest in MLB history among pitchers with at least 250 games.

Let's let him throw two innings after he just threw. Good old Rocco numbers don't lie.

Think what this bullpen be like without Duran

I really like that Connelly loaded up on system talent. I feel all these guys have a complimentary aspect to what is already on the roster.

** Repost **

I'd give Tim Connelly and this new front office a very solid B-plus for their first draft class. I see the plan they had and think they executed relatively well.

I think they left a little cheese on the table at certain draft slots, but overall I like what they did -- getting two high-floor, two-way role players with size in the first round in Walker Kessler and Wendell Moore Jr., and two exciting, high-upside picks in the second round in Josh Minott and Matteo Spagnolo. Minnesota got better tonight.

My knee jerk reaction was that this was an underwhelming draft by the Wolves. Sporting News ranked our draft as a B- which was tied with 20-24 out of 27 teams that had draft picks and I don't think that's too harsh. ttps://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/news/nba-draft-grades-2022-best-pistons-worst-bulls/xgtk9iw7r2fg0qy1gxwipdzm I liked the Wolves trading back to get 22 and 29 but I hated the Kessler pick and I am not as high on Wendell Moore as most, so I wasn't crazy with the pick. I probably liked the Minott pick the best of all four.

Wait, we got Minott?? I totally missed that until just now. Says Charlotte on the draft board, and I went to sleep before we got to that point, so I missed any trade we made.

I don't know much about Minott yet, but J. Kyle Mann I think was saying on his podcast this past week that he was a huge analytical darling. Didn't play much, but when he did, apparently he was really effective. I want to say I heard the phrase "per minute monster" used in the podcast I heard about him. Guess who's about to go check out some youtube clips!! Sounds good!

EDIT: Yikes, that's an ugly looking jumper!
