Is Connelly done...

Post by DNatagal »

Building this roster? We all know this board sees everything in a vacuum, each move is independently critiqued from all angles and directions. My question is, with the moves that have been made, the rumors and conjecture, is this it? I lean towards wanting to wait and see what a truly professional front office can do with the support of ownership. Our previous leader, Rossas did a pretty good job setting this team up to make the playoffs, but what will Connelly do?

I think there is at least 2 more moves to be made, 1 FA signing at MLE and a medium/large move involving Beasley and Reid. What are you guys guessing?

Britt Robson and Dane Moore discussed this at the end of their most recent podcast (about the last 20 minutes):

The jist of it is DLo is not a good fit as the Edwards/KAT duo grows. DLo is entering a contract year and it is not fair to ask him to take on a lesser role with a smaller contract. And while DLo showed defensive improvement, it was due in part to defensive schemes to help him out.

I had not considered the contract angle of the situation, and it is a very good point. If a resolution cannot be found, having him play out his final year is not the end of the world, but it is not the ideal situation. I really do expect DLo to be moved this offseason.

Tim, Good recap of the Dane/Britt discussion. I believe they stated it colloquially as the Wolves being in a pickle because DLO and his agent have every right to ask for a pretty high number given how he contributed to winning last season, yet the Wolves probably don't think (rightfully in my mind) that he's the best long-term fit at PG given his playing style and defensive limitations.

I could very easily see this awkwardly dragging out into the regular where he plays on an expiring deal. That's not ideal, but it might be necessary if we don't think we can get a fair return in a trade.

As for D'Natagal's question, I think a lot depends on how the DLO situation plays out. Trading him would obviously be a big move and could have a profound effect on how we use the MLE (hello Tyus Jones!). But if we hold onto him, then we are limited to what we can do to find a starting-level 4 without compromising our ability to go big-game hunting in 2023.

In other words, be prepared for a lot of rumors of big moves, but also prepare for a reality that may bring largely the same core group to start the season.
