Dell Demps

Post by kekgeek »

The Minnesota Timberwolves are hiring Jazz assistant coach and former Pelicans GM Dell Demps as part of new President Tim Connelly's front office, sources tell me and @JonKrawczynski.

Gupta can't be happy but the wolves now have 5 legit front office guys (with Lloyd, Gupta, Demps, Connelly and the grizzlies guy that was brought in before Connelly

Could Donavan Mitchell be a possibility?

I don't see how Demps tilts things in our favor.

Besides, it just feels like everything's being driven towards Spida eventually going to NY somehow. It would probably happen already except nobody wants to take back Randle at the moment.

Mitchell still has four years on his contract, so unless someone offers up a mega package, he's going to be in Utah for the foreseeable future.

I wouldn't count Steve Senior from Memphis he is lower in the order and Gupta literally hired him after Pascucci was not retained.

One thing many on this board thought was lacking in the front office under Rosas was a guy that had actually played basketball at all beyond college. Heck I don't even remember anyone that played division I college in the front office. Demps didn't play much in the NBA but played pro basketball for a few years. After leaving being a GM he ended up going into coaching with Snyder with Utah (really surprising development that he walked away) and so I think the front office gets a real basketball guy with the Demps hire. I know Demps is close to Connelly but I'm not sure whether he is going to jump in front of Gupta.

The Wolves went from having a pretty inexperienced front office to having 2 guys that have been there done that. That isn't always good but Connelly has a good track record not just of making the right moves but he also has hired a lot of the right people. Maybe Gupta jumps at the first chance he gets to run a team or maybe he sticks around for a while if he gets to do what he is good at and his voice is heard. Sometimes people make a lateral move because they aren't happy where they are and that could be the person above you which seems to have been part of why Gupta was looking at leaving. Sometimes people take a promotion because they are tired of the person they are working for. The other question is...how well is Gupta being compensated at this point?

I'm not sure why this was done or what role Demps will have. Demps was fired from New Orleans. I'm a little concerns that too many cooks might spoil the.... Tim Connelly speaks of being so collaborative and deferential that I worry his voice could get drowned out a bit and the last two hires are a mixed bag. I wish it were just Connelly with input from Gupta, Finch and the scouts, making the calls, but we'll see how it plays out.

I think it's a near certainty that Sachin Gupta is on the way out. The question is a matter of when, not if. Will he leave shortly after the draft? Will he leave before the season starts? Does he make it through this season and take interviews elsewhere for promotions?

Agree on him leaving, and we never really got to see what he could do. Wish he would have made some moves last year but sometimes your best move is evaluation or the move you avoid.
