Odds are this is a smokescreen to try and relieve some of the scrutiny directed at the Cavs right now but I still think it's interesting.
Part of me really wanted him to leave after the season but it looks like he is planning on opting-in on his player option. Would have been nice for him to show his loyalty to Minnesota by doing the same for us but in the end I'm happy we got Wiggins and if we can end up with Okafor, hell I won't even think of Love again

It makes sense financially because of the cap jump after next year. He gets another year to bounce back and try to win and if they still can't do it he can leave with a big payday with the new cap.

Does the cap number effect that the max a player can sign for or the amount a team can spend?
It is risky to opt-in or sign a short contract. Would you rather get 80% of what you will get paid over the next 5 years or roll the dice and maybe get injured and get 20%.

The max is a determined percentage of the cap based on NBA experience so if he re-signs next offseason he gets 30% of 68-70 million with 7.5% raises. If he waits another summer he could get 30% of 80-90+ million with the same raises. Over the life of a deal that is a lot of money to leave on the table considering your only hurdle is injuries because of how many teams will have a ton of cap space to get him at top dollar price when the cap goes up.

Will the Cavs want him to opt-in?
I thought he'd be a great fit there. Apparently, he's not. And if they were thinking he would be the last line of defense... that's on the Cavs.
They seem to be hiding what Love does well... to expose what he does poorly. Strange things in Cleveland.

He almost has to opt in now. His fragile ego wouldn't be able to handle not getting offered the max on the open market.

NY or LA would still offer him the max. They're not going to get anybody else so they'd settle just like the Knicks did with Amare when they knew they were out on the other big names.
