More trade speculation

Post by mrhockey89 »

https://dunkingwithwolves.com/2020/11/05/timberwolves-rumors-shopping-no-17-pick-in-nba-draft-johnson-culver/

I feel like DunkingwiththeWolves is more a blog than anything anything so I don't typically read much from them, but I found this article to have interesting suggestions (no idea if there's truth to it).

#17 + JJ for Gallinari
Culver is available 'only' if it's involving a package that nets us a star in return.

The 2nd one seems pretty obvious to me, especially given he's still a positive trade asset and he is one of the few salaries that could actually help us with matching salaries for a higher end player.

The Gallinari take I find interesting though (I assume via S&T). He's a pretty good fit with the Wolves needs, though he's 32, so not so much with the timeline. If we strike out in the trade market and/or free agency, I'd be happy making that move to see the team make a step forward, then hoping #1 turns out to be a player. We need a winning culture to develop, and maybe this would be a possible backup plan.

It's a no on Danilo Gallinari for me, personally. It's a tired cliche in the sports world, but it rings true often. The greatest ability is availability. Gallo doesn't have that going for him. In his last six seasons he's played in 326 games. That's about 55 games a year, or roughly two-thirds of an 82-game season.

In theory, this could work out. He's a great fit offensively. He can shoot and make threes with great efficiency and volume. He can create his own shot. He can grab and go in transition. Prior to last season he split his minutes almost equally between both forward spots. That versatility is exactly what the Wolves seem to want next to Karl-Anthony Towns. There's a lot to like.

But adding him does absolutely nothing for the real woes of this team. He's never been known as a good defender. He's pretty pedestrian on the glass. He doesn't improve the overall athleticism on this team, which is quietly an issue, in my opinion. He's also likely to command $18-20M annually, which is a number that I wouldn't be comfortable giving him in a multi-year deal. That's especially because of his durability concerns and at the age of 32 I don't expect him to buck that trend. And then you add on to that by having to give up a first-round pick just outside the lottery as well as a productive-yet-unspectacular veteran forward on an expiring contract in James Johnson just to get him.

I think we can utilize those resources better elsewhere. That's my case.

Gallo only seems to be healthy when he plays the Wolves. Id pass unless it is a one or two year deal.

Sure Gallo is a good player and I believe he isn't a liability on defense anymore but...this seems like a backwards trade. OKC is the team that easily made the playoffs and the Wolves are the bad team. We shouldn't be giving up worthwhile draft picks for a guy like Gallo it should be a playoff team like...OKC. Lol

If you want to have some fun go look at how many draft picks OKC has coming to them the next few years plus a bunch of possible pick swaps. It's a lot of assets AND they were still good last year!

That's a good post Monster. I like Gallo as a player, but I think this is a case of wrong place, wrong time.

Mega trade - Dont think the Pelicans would do it but would you do:

#1, James Johnson, and Culver for

Jrue Holiday and Brandon Ingram

They might do that package for one of those guys but certainly not both.
