Towns is surprisingly considering signing an extension

Great news of course, I'm just kind of stunned that he potentially isn't waiting to see how things go this season!

Awesome to hear indeed. More evidence that he really does want to stay here long term.

Karl-Anthony Towns should fire his agent if this is the case. I think the smartest route to take would be to play out his current contract and then take 1 + 1 deals afterwards until the salary cap inevitably rises again. He'd stand to make much more money doing that, but perhaps Towns would prefer the financial security versus the most earning potential. He's also long said that he wants to be "the guy" that brings Minnesota basketball back to relevance. I also wonder if watching Giannis Antetokounmpo's situation play out will have any effect on his decision.

Re: Towns is surprisingly considering signing an extension
Towns has publicly committed to the Timberwolves several times, most recently at the end of the 2020-21 season, when he told reporters he wanted to have a career like Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant, spending it all with one team. According to someone close to Towns, nothing related to that goal was altered in any meaningful way by Rosas's dismissal. A contract extension is already on his radar.
"My chips are all on the table," Towns says. "So it's up to the Wolves, you know? If they give me the chance to stay there I fa' sho would take it. The ball is in their court."

Whoa, he lost 50 pounds during covid recovery. Sheds light on quite a bit.
Nice link Cam, quite the insightful read

Question do we want Kat signing that extension. I think Kat is amazing but we have seen a lot with guys getting this 2nd max contract not working out. Also I don't know if Kat is a top 10 guy so do we want to be paying him that huge amount?

Minnesota should offer him a max extension at the earliest time available. There is no downside to locking him into more years and extending the window they have to compete with him. Again, Karl-Anthony Towns has not been the issue. He just hasn't been the singular answer -- and no team in the NBA has one. It takes a village -- err, it takes a highly talented team to win in this league. One player cannot win on his own.

I'm reading the CBA FAQ and here are a couple things to consider.
The longest a contract can be extended is 5 total seasons including what is left on the contract (6 years of you do it with a year left on a rookie deal). If Towns did sign an extension before the season it would be adding 2 more seasons to his deal.
Could he make more money if he waited? Probably. How much more money? How badly does he want that extra few million? We have seen some of the other stars take a little less to have their guy/s on the team (Deandre Jordon) maybe Towns doesn't feel like he needs to absolutely maximize his earnings 4 and 5 years from now. The first year of the new seasons on his contract would be over 43 million. That's a lot of money and let's say he wants to put to bed the idea he wants to leave (even if he decides to change his mind later) you can't pay enough in marketing or whatever to get people to stop taking about your future. If I was making that kind of money and giving up a couple million (I get it could be a lot more in this case) that would save me from answering questions about "are you staying in MN?" For even a year it might be worth it.
Also IF...he signs this deal and is actually committed to MN and he clearly takes less money that could speak volumes. Someone leading and taking less money I think would actually resonate with other players. Maybe Russell would be willing to take a little less next contract etc. Yes that's absolutely thinking too positively but money matters especially in pro sports.
Having said all this I'll be surprised if he digs an extension. If he does that will be good for the Wolves...either to have him as a player or if it comes to it and they have to trade him at some point.
Re: Towns is surprisingly considering signing an extension
Hopefully, we can sign KAT to an extension soon. While I think the Wolves should be open to trading DLO whether or not KAT has extended, this would take away the argument from those who think KAT would bolt if DLO were traded.
