Ant Practice Video

It's a nice reminder of what he's capable of as a scorer. I would like to see him work on a straight-to-the-basket floater too. He really is a bucket waiting to happen. He needs to hit those step-backs and deep shots at a higher percentage this year, but it is promising that he's able to take those shots with that kind of ease.

I know it's just a workout, but I do wish he weren't so lackadaisical with his dribble. Based on last year, I think his handles aren't as strong as his ability to finish. If he can improve his ball handling, he'll be even more dangerous. First, because of his increased ability to get to places on the floor in a position to take a shot. Second, because it'll cause more disruptions for defenses, which will open up teammates for him to hit with the potential assist.

Of course, I'd love to see him practicing some defense too.

So yeah, Ant, if you're reading, in the next one I want to see you playing one-on-one defense against different types of players--from a shifty, quick little guy to a big bruiser or a long shooter. Then, maybe some tape of you in a 3 on 3 or 4 on 4 game playing some team defense like I know you can, engaged and aware of both the ball and your man at all times, boxing out on the shot too. And some ballhandling. Let me see how quick and tight you can keep your handle while moving around the floor.

Finally, Ant, I want to see a time-lapse shot of you shooting a few hundred free throws over multiple sessions with your % recorded on the screen as you go. If you could get it up to 83-85% by the end of the summer, I'd start feeling good. You are going to get to the line a ton in your career, so any improvement there is magnified, and that offensive efficiency is the sort of thing that shuts up critics and elevates stars. If you can get your average up to, or north of, 85%, as opposed to 75% on, say, 600 FTs per season (a conservative estimate for your prime, I think), that's probably good for an extra point per game without requiring any additional possessions. That might seem small, but that alone can put us in a bit more of a position to win games down the stretch. We had at least a couple overtime game last year. We had 23 games last year that ended within 5 points, and some of them were obviously closer down the stretch. In games like that, that one extra point might be the difference between being forced to foul to stop the clock or having the luxury of playing good defense, or the difference between having to force up tough shots early in the shot clock or having the time to get a good shot. Plus, it would give us even better odds of getting points with a closer down the stretch who can attack and draw fouls when needed. It's a little thing that would pay dividends.

Good stuff Drew. The mid-range runner/floater is definitely key for him since he's going to keep seeing a ton of drop coverage. Both his pull-up midrange J and runner were pretty bad last year.

It seemed like as the video went on his dribble was pretty tight on things he was comfortable doing. The first part he seemed to really be processing Alma he aspects of the move to really get it down.

To me he seems more a guy that has some just go out and ball type ability but obviously he needs to put in work and have enough discipline to improve and having a base to go from.

I think he's noticeably worked on his shot. He looks way more balanced and upright getting into his shot than he did at Georgia and during his rookie season. That's a big improvement. Before he would have a natural backwards lean in his shot. It was like he wasn't going straight up with squared shoulders. That doesn't appear to be the case anymore. It makes for a much more on target shot and better foundation for his release. I could see an improved three-point shooter there.
