Free Agency

Post by Hicks123 [enjin:6700838] »

What are folks thinking?

I think James Johnson enacts his PO ($16M).

I believe we re-sign Beasley & Hernangomez. Both provide the Wolves much needed 3 point shooting and athleticism, but neither address our defensive issues.

From a defensive standpoint, I would look at Favors. He is NOT the star some expected, but he is a solid player on both ends of floor. He has always had positive impact while on the floor. He plays a perfect complimentary role to KAT, and seems like he could be had in our price range.

Favors has been on teams in the playoffs... or battling for playoff berths... the past several years.

If it's not for more money, what's in it for him to join one of the league's worst teams that's been historically terrible and comically inept?

James Johnson is 100-percent taking that $16M player-option, which could be useful in multiple ways as I've discussed before.

Throw the bag -- three-years, $29.3M -- and a starting position at forward Jerami Grant using the standard Mid-Level Exception.

Also, Glenn Robinson III has some legitimate appeal both in perceived value and fit.

Salary cap projection at 96 million with lux tax number 139 million.

Wolves sit at approx 95.5 million with 12 rostered players and Cole Aldrich dead money.

That doesn't count for resigning Beasley, Henagomez, Evan Turner, McLaughlin, Kelan Martin.

3rd pick is 6.8 million
16th pick is 2.7 million
Wolves also have the 35th pick.

If Beasley signs for 12 million
McLaughlin for 2.5 million
And our 3 draft picks.

122.5 million in cap 2 roster spots over the limit and no MLE free agents or resigning Hernangomez. Trades will need to happen.

I think 12 mil is too much for Beasley, but I wasn't high on this trade when it took place. I like Hernan, but I would hope he would sign for around 4 mil per. Mclaughlin should be happy with the minimum.

I wind up with similar math as you. Some of those pending free agents won't be returning, notably Kelan Martin and Evan Turner. I also wouldn't be completely shocked if Juan Hernangomez wound up commanding a deal outside of an acceptable price range. Out of that group, Malik Beasley and Jordan McLaughlin are must have's, if only for continuity and value retention. You just hope that Beasley's market doesn't get boosted by another poorly-run franchise -- cough, cough, the Sacramento Kings of the league. $12M annually is a fine projection from where I sit. I'd start to feel uncomfortable north of that number.

Jacob Evans, Omari Spellman, and Jarred Vanderbilt make up the 'expendable' group, though I see reasons to keep the latter two.

There's always the possibility that at least one of our picks are packaged with multiple players in a deal for less players in quantity but better quality. I still think we'll hear Devin Booker rumors after the draft lottery. Keep your fingers crossed.

We will see what happens but I'm not sure that offer will he enough to get Grant. Honestly I'm not sure how much more than that he is actually worth. Don't get me wrong I like him though I have for years. GR3 for cheap would be nice kinda like getting a Jake Layman type but I think he is is a better defender.

I don't really see the draw with hernangomez. He's a nice minimum player, but I wouldn't be very excited to pay him much over that. I'd do 12 for Beasley, but would hope for maybe a little less. I like the idea of grant or someone similar. Need to get a defender next to towns (not hernangomez as a starter)

Something has to give with the log jam of Russell, Beasley, Culver and Okogie and we could even potentially be adding someone to that mix as well depending on how the draft cards fall. The question I have is does Beasley move the needle enough to take playing time away from Culver and Okogie as all 3 are SG's who can't play PG? Do you give up on Okogie or Culver prematurely and trade one of them away? I don't know how Okogie and/or Culver really have room to grow and shine if we bring back Beasley. Do you just not care at this point because we are so desperate for shooters that we keep the lower floor with Beasley and move on from the potential of a young guy? I don't know what to do. At the end of the day that trade up to get Culver was just a really bad move and now we have to figure out where to go from here.
