News from the Orlando Bubble
Tonight was an interesting night in the Orlando bubble. The Lakers lost to Indiana while the Bucks lost to the Mavs. It's going to be tough to predict this season's NBA champion. Like most, I'd still say the Lakers are the favorites with the Bucks and Clippers the most likely alternatives. But I wouldn't write off the Nuggets or even the Mavs at this point.
And how about Luka's performance today - 36 points, 19 assists and 14 rebounds Against . All I can say is wow!!. He's the sort of player you can build a championship team around.
The Nuggets reminded us again tonight that they're a contender as they beat the Jazz by two points. They also reminded us how a smaller or mid-market team builds a contender - with smart draft picks and without depending on picking on the top 4 or 5. Denver's top three scorers tonight were Murray (#7 pick), Jokic (#41 pick) and Porter Jr. (#14 pick). Their 4th best scorer tonight was Jerami Grant, a #32 pick who they traded for. It's the same model used by the Warriors who build an elite team around Curry, Thompson Green, none of whom were picked higher than #7.

So Lip what is the strategy you are putting forth? The Wolves should trade Towns and trade down from any pick higher than say #6? ;)

Lol. I'd trade Russell back to Golden State for Steph Curry and their unprotected first and second round picks this season. The only reason I'm including Curry is to match salaries. :) That's my strategy and I'm sticking to it!

The Suns look like a good young team, they gotta be Kicking themselves on TJ Warren tho..They gave him up for cash considerations!! Yikes!!

With the Wolves luck, Russell would become the new Steph Curry, Steph Curry would become the new Terrell Brandon, and the unprotected 1st round pick would be a total bust counting against our salary cap the next 4 years.

Speaking of previous draft blunders, I was reading an old Bill Simmons draft diary from 2008. We took OJ Mayo at #3, Love went #5. Anyone remember who we passed on at #4 and could have avoided the 2009 pg draft from hell?

That was a great trade for Love though. The best in Wolves history, right? Hard to knock it.
Curious though... I wonder if we would still have had to read all those Rubio >> Westbrook posts after their first matchup like we did... even after they produced these stat lines:
Rubio: 6 points / 5 reb / 6 ast (loss) >>>> Westbrook: 28 points / 4 reb / 6 ast (win)

Agreed. Great trade getting Love for Mayo. Even Simmons wrote he thought Westbrook was a reach at #4.

Re: News from the Orlando Bubble
Yep, Westbrook was considered a bit of a reach at 4 that year. That draft I recall like it was yesterday. There were 2.5 blue chippers according to all the experts: Michael Beasley (who was absolutely destroying college basketball on a nightly basis and looked like a better version of Carmelo), Derrick Rose (who came on like lightning after ripping up the NCAA Tourney), OJ Mayo was the .5 blue chipper (I recall Dwayne Wade was basically calling him the next superstar). I remember Jerryd Bayless being highly touted, and the big discussion on our board involved Brook Lopez, because he had a well developed skill set that we could have used. I think we all wanted Mayo (for the most part) and were probably all upset that we traded for Love (I know I was).
