This is infuriating. If Ryan Saunders had Vanderpool's job with the Wolves, would any other team in the League be interviewing him for their head coaching position? The answer is an easy, irrefutable no! Would any other NBA franchise have hired David Kahn as their President of Basketball Operations? Again, the answer is no. Would any other franchise have hired Thibodeau to fill both the head coach and PBO positions? Even the dunderhead Knicks' owner didn't do that? The list goes on. Glen Taylor has horrible judgment and makes terrible hiring decisions. He's proof that anyone can become billionaire in America.

He has a really good reputation, but I'll say this: he has one job right now and that's to get these guys to play defense. Year 1 did not work here. If he was coach right now, the long term outlook might be different, but last year would have happened anyway.
If he goes somewhere else, cool. If he goes somewhere else and he gets the team to play better defense, that's less of an indictment on Ryan Saunders than it is for the players.
Ryan is not just here because Glen has a soft spot in his heart. He's here because the players they're building around wanted this. So I'm all for Glen Taylor slander, but don't leave out Towns in this. The last 2 head coaches here were guys he was totally cool with. Long term, Rosas already has a coach in mind and it's probably not someone who is already here.

I think the soft spot might be in Taylor's head.
Re: Vanderpool to interview for rockets job
FWIW the Wolves did play some good defense using the principals that Vaterpool's principals he used with the Blazers. They started going away from that and stopped playing certain guys minutes. I'm not suggesting Vaterpool is some defensive genius or the a Wolves did something bad either but I'm not sure ai would close the book on whether or not Vanterpool knows how to coach defense based on the Wolves short season including when they traded away all but 2 players on their roster. I'm not upset if Vanterpool leaves and Yan Saunders stays I'd be upset we haven't even called other proven coaches who I'd take any day over Vanterpool and don't get me wrong I like Vanterpool and he has been a name that's drawn interest for a few years now.

Does anyone think Vanterpool will be hired as head coach by the Rockets? I honestly would be shocked if that happened.

I agree, Monster. My issue isn't so much that we didn't hire Vanterpool instead of Ryan, although I think Vanterpool would have been a much better choice between the two. My main issue, like yours, is passing on even better proven alternatives.

I just don't know why Kenny Atkinson isn't already the head coach in Minnesota. The fit with management's vision and play style as well as the personnel already on roster makes a lot of sense to me. Not to mention, he's already proven that he can lead an imperfect team to the playoffs albeit in the Eastern Conference. There's also familiarity with D'Angelo Russell and Pablo Prigioni for good measure.
The only thing standing in the way is Flip Saunders' son and ownership.

I think Glen wants Ryan to succeed but I think there is an element that has Rosas wanting him to succeed too. I think I it it was ONLY Glen wanting Ryan to have the job Rosas could convince Glen to make a move. I think Rosas actually believes innRyan and the model he has put forth. Like I said it's a big gamble. I think Pablo Prigioni might be the guy that could be in line if this doesn't work...and there isn't an obvious proven option available...like there is now.

I liked Atkinson before Thibs was hired. He had a reputation as a great developmental coach for young players and he would have been a perfect fit back then. Hiring Atkinson as coach would have also avoided all the terrible personnel moves that Thibs made. I still like Atkinson if we did make a coaching change, though, I think Ryan will continue as coach as he and KAT have had a great bond and no coach would have won with KAT missing most of the season.
