Great move. Watch Lavine and Dunn become superstars now.

I like Donovan but he has only coached players who have had HOF on it, and guys who were HOF before he got there in Westbrook, Durant and Paul. We will see how he will do with a completely unproven group and a totally different situation he has been in.

Man, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sure looked good under his watch... Billy D was a great hire for Chicago.

Right. My comment was not to say he's a fantastic coach but that we just have bad luck. OKC has a bright future with many picks in the next few years.

Once again I really like the hire, he just never had a team that didn't have a for sure a 1st ballot HOF. It will be interesting how he does with that team

Superstars aren't made, they just are.

Yes.

YES.

YES!!!!

[Note: This is the part that makes all the discussions about coaching here and elsewhere moot. In the NBA, superstars win games (and titles). ]

I don't know....Doncic and LeBron certainly just have "it" right away. But what about guys like Giannis, Butler, and Leonard? No one could have envisioned where they ended up even after their first season or two.

I suppose you could argue they were still self-made and coaching/organization had nothing to do with it. Or did it? Tough to know for sure.

Which one was it... Jason Kidd or Mike Budenholzer who was responsible for Giannis becoming a 7 foot athletic freak of nature?

Was it the same Tom Thibodeau, reviled around these parts for failing with so many young Wolves players, who is most responsible for Butler's ascension as a legit NBA player?

--------

I'm not saying coaches and organizations have NOTHING to do with it. But coaches and GMs change constantly... NBA superstars either have it in them or not. They have the talent. Skills. Desire.

Schemes and whatever can help accentuate that. But it's the drive + skills of the players that dictate if they become superstars or not.

Ultimately I agree that the vast majority of credit for a player becoming a star rests with the player. No doubt.

But I do think Thibs was a match made in heaven for Butler and in that particular case his style and philosophy was of benefit to Jimmy. I'm not sure Jimmy is the same player he is now without Thibs in those early years.

Kawhi came into the San Antonio organization which was at the peak of its powers, surrounded by the likes of Pop, RC Buford, Parker, Duncan, and Manu. That had to have helped him. I wonder if KAT had been drafted by San Antonio at that time would he be a completely different player on defense? Perhaps so.

It's hard to point to any one thing with Giannis, but Milwaukee has built a system that has worked really well for him (at least in the regular season).
