Wing Inventory

Post by Q12543 [enjin:6621299] »

Sort of funny that we're talking about signing a Euro-vet 5'9 PG and potentially drafting a Center with our #1 pick as two pillars of our offseason plan in the midst of a wing-dominant NBA. Let's take inventory of the wings we have on our roster and under contract (thus excl. Beasley for now) and their pluses and minuses:

Josh Okogie
+ Motor and intensity; plays really hard
+ "Do shit" player - gets deflections, rebounds, decent passer
+ Solid improvement trend from rookie to second year, can it continue?
- Discipline - sometimes plays out of control on both ends
- Shooting
Ceiling: Marcus Smart

Jarrett Culver
+ Good defensive potential
+ Potential secondary ball handler and play maker
- Shooting
Ceiling: Andre Iguodala

Jake Layman
+ Off ball cutting
+ Plays within himself
- Mediocre to poor at literally everything else
Ceiling: Omri Casspi

Jaylen Nowell
+ Smooth shot maker from a variety of distances
+ Potential to be secondary ball handler and play maker
- Dribble penetration
Ceiling: Evan Fournier

Jacob Evans
+ Defense
- Shooting
- Shot creation/scoring
Ceiling: Thabo Sefolosha

A few things....

- Nearly every one of our wings is more like a conventionally sized SG, with the exception of Layman. Man, we are really hurting for that skilled hybrid forward that could play SF or small-ball PF.

- I may be a bit generous with my Okogie and Culver "ceilings", but the book isn't closed on these guys yet. They could really keep improving and end up being high-level jack-of-all-trades types.

- I still have hopes for Nowell. That guys was arguably one of the top 5 or 6 G-Leaguers that weren't just down there for a cup of coffee or two. He was probably the Wolves' most consistent and reliable scorers and his defense is pretty solid. He doesn't have any really bad weaknesses - could grow into a very solid NBA SG.

I'm sorta/kinda ok with providing ceilings that include a Finals MVP and possible HOFer... but maybe more so if you also include floor options.

For example... Josh Okogie's floor could be Quinton Ross.

Yes we have Bench players as wings and one free agent wing who wants to prove he's not a bench player. We need starters and these guys would be great in their respective roles.

I thought about providing floors, but their floor would be what they are today, no? In other words, Josh Okogie's floor is Josh Okogie, Culver's is Culver, etc. Floor best apply to college and Euro prospects that have zero NBA time under their belt.

Maybe I just wanted to see you go search for other forgettable wings for a quick trip down memory lane.

Guys can still have floors but I don't know if it makes sense to come up with those...because really All it would be for most of these guys is simply out of the league like Bazz, Derrick Williams, Anthony Bennet etc.

What if we ditched the pf/c need and took Edwards. Kat and Russell and 3 wings?

Could have a decent 8 man rotation. We'd be lacking some girth but we'd be fast and quick shooting

I think we need wings desperately. If that is Edwards great. Our wings are bench players on any playoff team in the league. We need at least one starting caliber wing on this team who can 1. Hit a shot 2. Play some D. I know it is a lot to ask.
